Job Medic recently hosted a survey about mental health support for healthcare workers, and found some very interesting, but to me not surprising, results. Almost half of Brits (43%) struggle with the emotionally-straining aspect of their job role This statistic didn’t surprise me at all, as from my own experience working as a hospital midwife, I can honestly say I’ve struggled many times with the emotional element of my job. Being a healthcare worker means you can’t close your laptop at the end of the day and switch off from work. You deal with life and death, make life-changing decisio ..read more

Mental Health Survey A mental health survey by JobMedic found that although almost half of healthcare workers struggled with the emotionally straining aspect of their job, 41% had meaningful, touching moments at least once a week, and 27% experienced these daily. The survey also found that the two biggest drives for people working in healthcare was the knowledge that they were helping others and making a positive impact. I found these results really interesting because they completely sum up why people continue to work in healthcare. Generally, you only hear in the media negative ..read more

Jobmedic.co.uk held a very interesting survey around mental health issues among healthcare professionals asking 500 workers in the industry about their own experience. Here in our previous article you can view the full results : Our findings revealed a series of issues faced by workers in the healthcare industry, but also ways as a society we can try and tackle them. Although we found out that a great number of the healthcare workforce suffers from mental health issues, we paradoxically found that more than 90% of them still find their job rewarding. This is a significant finding because ..read more

It comes as no surprise that nurses are facing great amount of stress at work and this results to many of them throughout the UK to totally burn out. Prolonged stress levels cause the body to become overworked and can also lead to more serious health problems such as depression and insomnia. Naturally this is bad for both healthcare workers and their patients as it causes a drop in the level of patient care standards. A 2018 study by NHS Digital has found that more than 33,000 nurses walked away last year –  this is 20% more leavers since 2012/2013 – meaning there are now more leavers than joi ..read more

As a healthcare professional, your training consists of a lot of unsociable hours. Working in a hospital requires you to generally work long shifts, or a mixture of early and late shifts, starting as early as 07:00 and finishing as late as 21:00. The NHS is a 24/7 service, meaning that weekends and bank holidays are the same as any weekday. People still need to be looked after whatever the day or time, which means you’ll be expected to work whenever you’re needed. Although shift work can have its benefits, such as more days off than a standard 2-day weekend, it can also be a challenge. Working ..read more

It’s common knowledge that the NHS is a tough place to work, whatever your role is. At the trust I work for, I’m entitled to a generous six weeks of annual leave, which is very much needed. Through my three years of working in the NHS I’ve picked up a few tips, which might help you to make the most of planning and using your well-earned annual leave. Not only is it important how you plan your annual leave, but you also want to spend your time off in the right way so that you feel refreshed and relaxed for when you go back to work. 1. Use your crazy shift pattern to your advantage Pla ..read more

When I decided I wanted to be a midwife, I made sure I was prepared as possible. I’d read all the books, took as much clinical experience as possible and spoke to lots of midwives. I thought I had a good idea about what being a midwife and working in the NHS was all about. Here are 5 things that I learnt along the way, and definitely didn’t expect before I started my training. Night shifts make you feel hung-over. I could never prepare myself for training my body to deal with night shifts. No-one can explain how you’re going to feel. The feeling sick during the day, and being really hung ..read more

Everyone knows that working in healthcare is stressful. Long hours, minimal breaks and huge workloads can lead to people feeling really fed up and burnt out. I’ve found that self-care has become a really important part of my life, and when I don’t make the effort it makes a huge difference to my working and personal life. I wrote about self-care in healthcare a while back, but this post is about how simply putting yourself first can be all the self-care you need, regardless of whether you work in healthcare or not. This is applicable to everyone. Self-care has been a buzz word for the last ..read more
