We found out we had conceived Ochre during our version of lockdown in Thailand. I knew straight away that I wanted to try to have a home birth - maybe it would be third time “lucky”. Knowing this baby would be born in Spain, and knowing what I know about Spanish maternity services, I went about finding independent midwives to support me and my husband Fabian to do things our way. My search led me to Icosaedra, my dream team. Emilio, Marta, Yanira and Ana were everything I needed to feel truly supported and have all my wishes centred at every stage. They are all excellent and highly trained wo ..read more

There's a lot of conflicting information out there about alcohol and breastfeeding, there's also a lot of judgement and a tonne of confusion about the effects of alcohol on your baby. So let me clarify. Firstly, the affects on your baby are directly related to the amount you drink. Studies show that although "significant amounts" of alcohol are secreted into breast milk, it’s not considered harmful to your baby if the amount and duration are limited. Factors affecting your decision to have a drink or two:  1) Your baby’s age (newborns have immature livers and will be more affected while an ..read more

Childhood is when many of our core beliefs about people and the world we live in are laid down. These ideas stay with us our entire lives. One of the ways we try to be inclusive in our family is with special attention to the books we read. Reading books featuring people of colour, strong and kind female, male and non-binary characters, some with disability, themes of kindness and acceptance, mindfulness, losing loved ones, gender equality and traditional and cultural differences is really important to us. I’ve put together a book list for family and friends this year, or for anyone who desire ..read more

This, my beloved child, is the story of the day when you came to us and changed our lives forever. One might think that everything started in the morning of December 2, but it actually started one day earlier, on December 1st, 2016. Some background: I was due to have an elective cesarean that day. So, through my entire pregnancy I didn’t feel safe at all. I heard horror stories about here in the Thai hospital, all women in labour are in the same room and therefore no men can be there so they are really just caged and frightened labouring strangers. Knowing that, and because I don’t speak Th ..read more

WHAT IS A DOULA? In a world where there are so many negative stories, associations and medicalised processes, a Doula helps a woman to find her voice and feel empowered with choice at every stage of her transition to motherhood.  A Doula supports the couple as a team to make informed choices and to ensure those choices get heard when it matters. A doula offers; emotional, practical and informational support during your pregnancy, childbirth and postnatally if desired.  Practically, a doula will accompany you on hospital visits, hold your hand and rub your shoulders during labour, (to put it in ..read more

OUCH! What to do with a biting breastfeeder

“Look at those teeth! So I guess you’ll be stopping breastfeeding then?”"I hear this quite a bit and I always suggest that mothers calmly just explain that teeth play no part in breastfeeding thanks to tongue positioning and that if they have no plans to stop feeding then just say so proudly, knowing that World Health Organisation (WHO) advises breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond. If we don’t have teeth by age two, there’s something a little awry…But let’s talk about biting. A bite from little teeth on the nipple is not for the faint-hearted and can make a mother shoot through the roof ..read more
