I know many blogs I read start with an apology that they haven’t written for such a long time and I may have to follow that tradition this time too! Life just gets in the way, despite our good intentions … Since Christmas, life has been a bit topsy-turvy medically ending in my diagnosis for bowel cancer in March and subsequent tests and scans etc.  and then a month ago I had surgery to remove the cancer which was all successful though now there will still be some belt and braces chemo in about a months time. Having been through breast cancer 10 years ago I thought it would be familiar ter ..read more

Coming Home

A wonderful miracle happened last week! I received an email from Kate at The Saturday Dress to say she had what she knew was a waistcoat design by my mother Joan Nicholson. We exchanged excited emails and had a lovely chat over the phone and I could confirm that it was the actual waistcoat that my mother designed and made for Golden Hands magazine in 1970. On Thursday it arrived and it was quite an emotional moment to say the least! It is so beautiful, looks as fresh as though it had just been finished … I am so grateful to Kate for sending this to me and for it to find it’s way home after so ..read more

Country Living Feature
Nancy Nicholson

If you want to get started early with your Christmas makes then I would suggest a look at Country Living Christmas issue (yes, it’s really an early start) where you will find a feature about me and the business, though bear in mind this was an updated article from a few years back when I was 2 stone heavier than I am now … and then we did not have the range of kits we have today! As I went to do the post this morning at the excellent village store in Iden, I was greeted by the owners with great excitement as they had spotted the article when the new christmas magazines had come in that morning ..read more

Chicken of the woods
Nancy Nicholson

Today’s foraging … the BEST supper imaginable … Chicken of the woods, a bracket fungus which is actually better than the best roast chicken dinner. This found by friend Lucy in a cherry tree in a top secret churchyard and hilariously and precariously nudged out of a crevice in the tree, quite high up with quite a lot of giggling too, but a good 1kilo of bounty at the end of the adventure. We did ask the gentlemen in the church if it was ok to do this by the way, and I think he thought we were mad, but I actually care not as my supper is going to be amazingly delicious. But if you are salivat ..read more

The Lost Words, and Spell Songs

I recently received the wonderful book The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane … And the beautiful Spell Songs that have been composed around those words, hard to believe these are words disappeared from the English dictionary, words of bird and flora, and it and I have found myself reflecting on the anthems of bird songs which have been the soundtracks to different chapters of my life … Here it is the buzzards mewing to their young as they begin their first flight across the expanse of the marsh, wheeling, slowly spiralling across the space between the natural amphitheatre of hill and flatness ..read more

Hot summer days … small embroidery projects
Nancy Nicholson

It is hot today, 24th July … I am resigned to being still and finishing some new projects while the sun beats down outside, though here on top of the hills above the Romney Marsh there is a thick breeze, pretending to give relief, but really playing about making the corners hotter. The sea beckons later though for a swim in the brine … So here is a little thing or two which I am making into some more box kits, embroidery done and now just doing the packaging and instructions … this is our quiet month as everyone thinks of other things till the months lead us into Autumn. First, this little han ..read more

Spring Kits

Despite the freezing wind up here there is a slow but sure greening going on, as I watch the landscape evolving into a palette of yellows in the fields of oil seed rape,  blues, in the far distant flats of the marsh and greens in the trees closer to my house. The field next to the house is full of lambs and their attentive mothers and the farmer has just put a flock of chocolate brown cows and their lovely little calves into the field beyond I am working on a fabric collection at the moment (more about this in next post) but just thought I would post some of the kits which are selling well at ..read more
