From Nanny to daycare worker...

I'm trying to transition out of nannying and got a manager position for an after school daycare. I am so overwhelmed between trying to learn all the kids names, the the crazy behavior, to the way more lax atmosphere. Its kind of shocking but it is so many more kids. I'm just seeing stuff going wrong all the time but I'm new and don't want to say anything since I'm new. Its a bunch of 5 year olds and it just really chaotic obviously. Im obviously still adjusting since its new, but it just seems so much crazier and similar money to nannying. Curious to hear what people like about it, as I am tr ..read more

Is anyone else's classroom Outbreak City?

I'll preface this by stating I'm relatively new to working in a daycare setting, but I'm not new to jobs where airborne and contact illness is common/unavoidable. The classroom (3-4 year olds) I've been assigned to is difficult to manage for a number of reasons, but the Big Thing(tm) I can't get over is how sick everyone is getting! I have kids with strep, kids with pink eye, kids coming to class less than 24 hours after vomiting from a stomach bug... All at once? Not to mention the seasonal allergies and violent coughing. I know it's basically impossible to expect a healthy classroom, but it ..read more

First of all, I'd like to give the backstory on how we used to have a great director but she quit 2 months ago after not being able to keep up with the workload and disrespect from the school owner (her boss) after being director there for 3 years. The school owner never checks up on us as teachers, literally doesn't even talk to us and pretty much only cares about the money part and constantly overworked our old director then would get mad at her when she couldn't keep up with the list of things she had to get done. Our "new director" is a coworker that was a teacher just like the rest of us ..read more

Having concerns about one child repeatedly inappropriately touching one particular staff member. Advice?

Hi there. I run an after school class at our preschool for the older kids. There is one boy there who has some behavioural issues. Based on the specific things I have been seeing, I think he might be on the spectrum but I understand I'm not a medical professional and I don't get to make that call. There are different staff for the full day program and the after school program however I see him for both. He has behavioural issues in both classes, however most of them we are able to handle. The most concerning is that my TA in the after school program is very young, it's her first year of teach ..read more

So…does anyone’s center actually reinforce the green snot rule?

Every single center I’ve worked at has told me that their sick policy includes this rule: children with green mucus (sign of infection, dead blood cells causing the color) will be sent home. Every center I’ve worked at absolutely did not enforce this rule whatsoever. It seems like every day, my kiddos run around with neon green snot running like a faucet out of their noses. I’m wiping noses all day long. The kids are coughing, sneezing, obviously infectious, and yet administration doesn’t say a thing about it. I have yet to hear of a center where this rule is actually honored. I’m curious wha ..read more

So if you look at my last post, it was me freaking out because I felt like we were going off track and not being the best we could be. Lots of change came about. Fired the educator that was making my life hell…. that cut down 65% of the stress tbh. She was being the worst and I was sick of dealing with someone who had zero respect for the children and adults around her. Now, I have other staff- her “friends” who suddenly are saying random stuff about how things should be going, when raises should happen, when x should happen, blah blah. And when I try to explain or answer they just say “that ..read more

Decor ideas?

I work in a preschool transition room with 2yr olds. My classroom bathroom is mighty boring and ugly and I've thought of decorating it or sprucing it up for the kids to make it more interesting. Has anyone else decorated their bathroom? Does anyone decorate their bathroom? It's very colorless and the only thing on my wall is the required posters for changes and such. submitted by /u/keeperbean [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
