Devil’s Bridge, AZ With Arizona’s summer coming to a close we can say goodbye to those 110 degree days and hello to the balmy 85, which means more time can be spent enjoying the outdoors. On my latest visit to Phoenix we decided to drive up north to Sedona, and Page which is just south of the Utah border. We learned how to change a tire, hiked to near death, took selfies at cliff-edges, had local beer in small towns and drank wine with donkeys. Just outside of Sedona, the hike to Devil’s Bridge isn’t too strenuous, it’s roughly five-miles round-trip along a dirt road that leads into a more ro ..read more

Dining: Republic Cantina

Republic Cantina has ended its preview phase and is all glownup, as previews go it was long, at seven or so weeks it almost lasted as long as summer. No matter, because it felt very much like a restaurant from day one, on the occasions I visited not once did I get the sense that they were new to the game. The service was always good, the food excellent, the space charming and fresh. Situated in a new upscale condo building on a small block just off New York Ave in Truxton Circle, RC has definitely taken the neighborhood, if not city, by storm, landing on plenty of summer best of lists already ..read more

Road Trip Roundup

Over 4,500 miles and 17 states later we traveled a third of the country, from DC to New England to the Gulf and over to the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. Crossing the country by car was a lot of fun, sure there’s a lot of empty space but there’s also something to be said about small town America and meeting people outside of your everyday life. A few thoughts from the trip below, and links to all the places we visited. With all the miles traveled I still don’t know what weigh stations are, not that they’re ever open. If you drive yourself to Baton Rouge you’ll find gas at $2.05 a gallon ..read more

Road Trip: Roswell & White Sands

Thursday - Day Ten For our New Mexico stop we initially thought it would be Albuquerque or even back down into Texas into El Paso, depending on how north or south we’d be, a quick drive through to get us into Arizona. Not once did I imagine we’d end up in Roswell, but there we were with our tin hats. I was a big fan of The X-Files growing up, I think there’s still a box of VHS cassettes collecting dust in my parents attic, which I should probably eBay. We didn’t quite know what to expect, at the very least we could say we’d been, not quite a bucket list destination but not far off. Almost eve ..read more

Road Trip: Texas

Wednesday - Day Nine It took us about 12 hours over two days to get through Texas, we went from torrential rain approaching Houston to clear skies and scorching summer heat into the Hill Country and Plains. It’s obvious to say but Texas really is big, and it’s everything you expect it to be. I’ve been to Texas many times before but always to one of the major cities, except that one time I went horseback-riding at a dude ranch with a dozen bachelorettes, that happened once. To truly see Texas you just have to get in a car and drive across it. After quite a bit of deliberating we decided to sp ..read more

St. Louis Cathedral Tuesday - Day Eight From Nashville it was a non-stop drive to New Orleans, passing through Alabama and Mississippi. It wasn’t long after crossing the Louisiana state line that we knew we were in the deep south, in the north road-kill consists of deer and raccoons, in the south it’s alligators. A mix up with our hotel room provided us with a couple of drinks at the bar, it seemed like the best way to start off our evening before setting out for the French Quarter. After seeing the obligatory sites- Jackson Square, the Mississippi and Bourbon Street we headed a little furthe ..read more

Robert’s Western World Monday - Day Seven The morning started out a little something like this: M: Well, the car is nearly packed, what are you going to do with yourself for the rest of the week? Me: Look for a job I suppose. M: Want to come to Phoenix? Me: Sure, why not… I’ll bring my laptop. M: Really…? Pack a bag while I shower.  And that’s how I ended up spending another five days in a car to Arizona, not before a quick oil change.  You’d think the first thing we would have decided on was where we were going to drive to before we hit the road, but no, that was the least of our ..read more

Road Trip: Thimble Islands, CT

Friday - Day Six For our sixth and final day on the road, for this leg at least, we headed back home to DC, we jumped on I91 south out of Vermont through Massachusetts on into Connecticut. Before hitting the misery of I95 we stopped at The Thimble Islands, an archipelago (ARK-ih-PEL-ə-goh) just east of New Haven. As we didn’t get a chance to stop in Maine this was the next best thing to Cabot Cove, a cute harbor town that caters mostly to tourists and fishing boats. No Jessica Fletcher though. Tourists we were, so a boat tour we did. There are a few dozen of the islands, all of them uniquely ..read more

Road Trip: Grafton, Rockingham & Hamilton Falls

Hamilton Falls, Jamaica Park Thursday - Day Five We hadn’t really explored much of Grafton so on our last full day we walked to the village and took a hike through the woods, with the local cheese-monger as our destination. The weather was crisp if not a little warm but we made it at least five miles, high five! I have a love hate relationship with nature, I enjoy it until I see it. Always worried about snakes and other critters, thankfully all we saw along our hike was an eastern newt the size of an AirPod and a tribe of goats. Sadly the cheese-monger was closed, Grafton was celebrating its ..read more
