Whilst working with a customer to migrate them from System Center 2012 Configuration Manager (that’s right you heard me!), we noticed that the migrated clients were not successfully connecting to the Cloud Management Gateway on the destination Current Branch site. On closer inspection, we noted that the ConfigMgr client was not automatically upgrading on the new site. The ccmsetup.log was nicely reporting a generic error. File C:\Windows\ccmsetup\MicrosoftPolicyPlatformSetup.msi failed. Error text. ExitCode 1603Action: Error Messages InstallFromManifest failed 0x80070643 CcmSetup failed with e ..read more

Targeted usage of the Cloud Management Gateway for Entra ID devices
SCCMentor

When allowing the usage of the Cloud Management Gateway in ConfigMgr, we assign a client setting for Enable clients to use a cloud management gateway and this can be set in the Client Settings under Administration\Overview\Client Settings in the Cloud Service section. Note we can also Allow access to cloud distribution point so clients can access content from the associated CDP. Some admins don’t like to modify the default client settings and we tend to advice against this and to copy the default off into a custom settings policy. Also when testing the CMG, admins also like to be granular, ra ..read more

Here’s the start of a few macOS related blog posts which I’m working on with a great friend of mine, Frank Thomas-Hockley (@fth_nix on Twitter), as we get to grips with managing this operating system via Microsoft Intune. Back in 2020, I did a series of blog posts about how to set to Apple Business Manager (ABM), you can take a look at them here (note that Apple has updated the ABM interface since those blog posts were written). The Windows Autopilot service release of 2307 introduced the ability to remove Autopilot devices in one step without having to remove the existing Intune device first. A nice welcome move which means if the device is removed from the Autopilot view, then it still continues to be Intune managed as the device is not removed from its enrolled state. To remove the device from Autopilot head over to Devices\Windows\Windows Enrollment\Devices in the Intune portal. Select the device you wish to delete and click the Delete option. Confirm the removal by clicking Yes. The device will report as Devic ..read more

As part of the 2307 service release of Windows 365, moving a Cloud PC has moved from preview into general availability. By making changes to a Windows 365 provisioning policy, you have the ability to relocate existing Cloud PCs from their current region or Azure network connection (ANC) to a different one. To ensure minimal disruption to users, it is recommended to execute these moves over the weekend. During the relocation process, the Cloud PCs will be temporarily shut down. Therefore, it’s important to notify your users in advance so they can save their work and log off. Any new Cloud PCs g ..read more

Setting up a migrated ConfigMgr instance on Server 2022 for a customer and noticed that the Software Update deployment packages were failing when attempting to upload content to the Cloud Management Gateway. A quick Google on the error stated that it could be related to Branch Cache or we shouldn’t be uploading Software Update content to the CMG in the first place. The problem had a simple resolution in the end and I thought I would call it out in case anyone else gets this. As stated, the PkgXferMg.log reported Warning – returning null/empty download address from content upload <packageID ..read more

This blog is a series of guides which aim to run through the Conditional Access (CA) templates which Microsoft has published under the title Conditional Access templates (Preview). The templates get you up and running with CA but what is the impact of turning on the policies on devices, how can you adjust the templates to work in your environment and what does the end user experience look like on the endpoint? The series is co-written by Paul Winstanley, a seven times Enterprise Mobility MVP based in the UK and Mike Marable, an active member of the MEM community, based in the US. Conditional A ..read more
