Grayed out

It’s been weeks and weeks since Cindy or I have checked in. Have you heard of the word “languishing” to describe the “almost-end-of-the-pandemic” general malaise? I read a headline about it, but was too zoned out to dive into the details, and that about sums up where I’ve been for a couple of weeks — wandering around in a grayed-out world, trying to regain some momentum. Are you feeling the same? I received both rounds of vaccine in late March, so my roommate and I headed south to visit friends and family. Our ultimate destination was Hilton Head, South Carolina. I was pretty sure that a dose ..read more

It’s almost here! I cannot wait. What’s great about spring in western New York? the smell of mud maple syrup teasingly warm days and chilly nights not-yet-hatched bugs violets new wild babies Buffalo’s Broadway Market and it’s Easter vendors spring cleaning (kidding) My favorite local garden shop and florist is having a retirement sale and I snagged an Amish-made wall quilt rack. I’m really going to miss her shop, but I’m excited to have another place to display my art. As I sort through my Easter decorations, I found this cheeky wall hanging. You can find the pattern here — Happy Spring! Bu ..read more

Yellow Dilemma

It’s Cindy reporting in today with a yellow dilemma. I’m getting ready to join my Grandmother’s Flower Garden Blocks and I have two yellow prints to choose from. In keeping with my 30’s inspired blocks, both prints are designed by Darlene Zimmerman. The print below is called “Sunshine Garden” and it has triangles surrounded by tiny dots in a random pattern. It’s a gold/yellow print on a white background. My next print is called “Southern Belles” and it has teeny, tiny x’s and o’s in structured rows and columns. It’s also a gold/yellow print on a white background. So…I need your opinion on wh ..read more

Good morning! It’s Cindy reporting in today. I’ve been working on my Eskimo Snow quilt and thought I would update you on my progress. This panel came from the Quilted Raven Alaska shop in Anchorage and was designed by Barbara Lavallee. Here’s the link so you can have a look at some of her panels and coordinating fabrics…they are so cute! https://www.quiltedravenalaska.com/ I’m in the process of making snowflake blocks that coordinate with the colors in the panel. While this quilt is still in the design process, I think I will need at least 18 snowflake blocks that are made from 1.25 inch squa ..read more

Stopping by woods on a snowy morning

While most of my family, including Cindy, was basking in the Florida sunshine last weekend, I decided that it was high time I saw my quilting mentor. I haven’t seen her since July when we snuck in an outdoor happy hour at her lovely home not far from the farm. So I invited her to a socially-distanced tea at the “Y” at the top of the hill by the farm on Saturday morning. We planned to sit in our cars and chat, but I wanted to make it a little more special, so I made a pitcher of Lady Grey tea, packed some quilts and some chairs, and a tea table and headed for the hill. The sun was shining and t ..read more

Lucky Me!

Good morning! It’s Cindy reporting in from Ohio. I feel so lucky to have inherited a sewing basket from my husband’s grandmother. She was affectionately known as “Granny” to everyone. Granny loved to paper piece and she made many beautiful hexagon quilts over the years. I decided to store my hexagon quilt supplies in her basket as a tribute to her and to the world of paper piecing. Inside the basket there is a clear plastic tray that works great for sorting fabrics; before, during and after the hexagon making process. The basket is deep enough to hold my entire stash of 30’s prints, finished ..read more

Is the last blast of winter upon us? As I see the stunning social media pictures from my old friends in Austin, Texas, it does not seem possible that spring will break out any minute, but that is, in fact, the case. Here in New York, the pattern in recent winters is to have one last big storm at the end of January-ish, and then the warm days start to shine. I’m praying that when the winter storm currently frosting Austin arrives on our doorstep sometime this evening, it will be the last of its ilk for 2021. I hope so. I’m over it for the year. Actually, there are a lot of things I’m pretty sic ..read more

Valentine’s Day Gifts

There’s still time to make a few quick Valentine’s Day gifts…like these awesome earbud cases. There’s even time to drop them in the mail for a timely Valentine’s Day arrival. Necessity may be the mother of invention but I have concluded that necessity is the mother of YouTube searches! I found this cute, free earbud case pattern on the Ann Arbor Sewing Center website along with a very helpful video tutorial. The pattern calls for using an old CD as a template for sewing the circle. The swivel hook works great for attaching the case to the inside or outside of a purse or backpack. I’m in the ..read more

Happy Monday! It’s Sandy logging in from the farm…. Hurray, hurray, the change of season has officially begun: welcome to the months that create the “anticipation of spring”. My childhood friend –who also taught me how to quilt– gave me this name for the time leading up to “real spring”. (I have missed her greatly during this time of Covid. The last time I saw her was in July when we had a socially distanced happy hour at her lovely home.) I have never asked my friend for the exact dates of the season now known, thanks to her, as the “anticipation of spring”. But today I am hereby proclaiming ..read more
