How did Goblins/Hobgoblins go from simple house spirits to what they became in the LOTR, D&D, and MTG

How did tiny house spirits become the default early level fantasy monsters we know to day? Historically, has there ever been a real difference between the two or are they different names for the same species? Goblins in today’s media are more aggressive compared to the mischievous, but helpful spirits they used to be. Although modern goblins come off as mindless monsters, there is also this weird connection with industry and technology. In one fantasy setting they are attacking a party of heroes with rusty weapons and in the next they are crazy artificers and alchemists whose inventions blow ..read more

The Demoness Jahī and her Indo-European Context

Jahī is the Avestan name of the chief demoness of Ahriman who brings defilement and caused women to menstruate. It seems as if this is a remnant of a dualistic creation in which Ormuzd made the Righteous Man and Ahriman the Impure Woman. Since Zoroastrian teachings have been said to have influenced Jewish belief, the similarity to Lilith might have arisen in part from this path (and most well-known aspects of Lilith, that she was created by God as Adam’s first wife, etc., are very late, and so are more likely to be influenced by foreign ideas than earlier ones). Her exact role and original na ..read more

What are some of the best books for various world mythology? What would be the best source for Maori or Polynesian mythology, for example. Or aboriginal mythology. Or, perhaps, Sumerian mythology. Where is the best place to find information on mythology that isn’t Greek or Nordic? submitted by /u/TriangleMan_4 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I found a statement that Ne Zha from Chinese mythology has Twin swords being the yin and yang as blades or representing them. I've never heard of this from The Fengshen Yanyi so I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's an actual source for this. submitted by /u/Comando26 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I'm looking for a god or goddess of kindness somewhere in the world (that is not Judeo-Christian)

Hi, I am a fiction writer and my current work is set in the late Roman Empire. I have a fair understanding of Roman and Greek mythology. Considerably less for Celtic/Druidic, and Norse. And pretty much nothing to the east of the Roman Empire. I have tried to find a god or goddess whose primary attribute is kindness or compassion. But my searches/researches haven't turned anything up. Does anyone know of any god or goddess who has an attribute of kindness or compassion as a significant aspect of them? It doesn't have to be confined to Greco-Roman mythology or even Norse or Celtic. The Middle E ..read more

Hello! I am currently acquiring my AAS of Mortuary Science to become a mortician and learn about funerary rites. I want to get as advanced an education as I can and form a dissertation on culture commonalities and differences pertaining to Thanatology and funerary preparation and rites in various cultures. I plan on getting my Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology with a language minor of Greek. This will enable me to study various cultures, religions, and research into funerary rites too. Then I have my question. Where can I get a Masters/PhD in Mythology and Folklore with the ability to have my ..read more
