For hydrolysis of esters, I undertsand you form a carboxylic acid, but I'm confused why the amide doesn't form a carboxylic acid and just loses the carbonyl gorup. Thank youuu

Ideas for synthesizing 1,3 aminoalcohol

Have been stuck trying to propose a synthesis for this fragment for a long time. The ideas I have had so far are nitrile aldol (nitrile + aldehyde) or mannich reaction), but cannot figure out how to obtain stereoselectivity. Is there a simpler solution I am overlooking? submitted by /u/memer4242 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Good nucleophile vs poor nucleophile vs basicity?

Hey guys, I have my ochem final pretty soon and the one thing that is really tripping me up this unit is differentiating between a good nucleophile and a poor nucleophile in substitution and elimination reactions. Is there some kind of trick I can learn to identify a good vs poor nucleophile immediately? And how does this relate to basicity? I know a good nucleophile is typically a strong base, but when is a weak base a good nucleophile? submitted by /u/sunjaw53 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is there any reference books that talks about the pi-pi stacking of benzene ring and the substituent effect?

I am confused about how to explain the electron cloud of the aromatic ring based on the substituents and how we can explain the pi-pi stacking based on that. What concept do we use to describe this? In detail, the benzene ring has an electron crowd around the aromatic ring because of the presence of pi—-electrons. If we make substituents that are EW or ED, how does that affect the electron-cloud? submitted by /u/Ok_Switch_9728 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
