Russian Journalist Vladimir Pozner Interviews Former Secretary of Defense William Perry This interview was first recorded in February 2018, and was originally slated to air on Russian TV channel Russia One in April but was postponed amidst political controversy after the U.S. accused Syrian troops of using chemical weapons against civilians in Douma, and said that the Russian government bears responsibility for supporting the Assad regime. The Honorable Jerry Moran United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Moran, We write to respectfully request that Congress reject the Trump administration’s request for new, more usable, “low-yield” nuclear warheads for Trident missiles. There is no need for such weapons and building them would make the United States less safe. These so-called “low-yield” weapons are a gateway to nuclear catastrophe and should not be pursued. To justify this dangerous proposal, the Trump administration is promoting a false narrative that the United States has a “gap” in its ability to deter the use ..read more

Is Denuclearization of North Korea Possible? In my March 12 op-ed in the World Post-Washington Post, I favored the announced U.S.-Korean summit meeting because, while I did not expect it to result in denuclearization, I believed that it could result in an agreement putting restraints on the North Korean program that would benefit U.S. security, and I described restraints that were both negotiable and verifiable.   -Read William Perry's suggestions for a U.S. - North Korean nuclear agreement-   What I did not mention, which I have in other writings on North Korea, is that a ..read more

A meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un

March 8, 2018 I was very encouraged to hear that a summit meeting is being planned for May to deal with the dangerous North Korea nuclear program. This is a major improvement over diplomacy that consisted of shouting insults at each other. But there are two key questions about this meeting: First: what will we talk about? That is, what does the U.S. expect to get, and what is the U.S. willing to give? Second:  what will we and North Korea be doing while we are talking? Are the U.S. and its allies going to sustain the pressure presently on North Korea? And will North Korea continue the dev ..read more

Is it time for a 21st-century version of ‘The Day After’?

It’s beginning to feel like the 1980s all over again. Already this year, we’ve seen Donald Trump tweeting provocative nuclear threats about North Korea. A terrifying (but false) incoming missile alert set Hawaiians on edge, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention planned (and then postponed) a nuclear attack preparedness session. The Pentagon has also proposed a policy of possible nuclear retaliation for cyberattacks. As a teenager, I remember being horrified about the possibility of nuclear war. I watched daily news reports about the nuclear arms race between the U.S. a ..read more

Doomsday: Two Minutes to Midnight.

It is now two minutes to midnight. For some time I have feared that the threat of nuclear disaster has grown beyond the risk we faced during the darkest years of the Cold War. The events of the past year have only increased my concern that the danger of a nuclear catastrophe is increasingly real.  I am saddened but not surprised by the Bulletin’s decision to move forward the Doomsday Clock to 2 minutes to midnight, the closest it has ever been to global midnight. Deteriorating relations between nuclear armed states, false alarms, careless rhetoric combined with provocative actions, and th ..read more

Re-invoking Cold War Trauma: Putting Hawaii Into Context by Sahil Shah “How many children in Hawaii thought they were going to die in a nuclear apocalypse today?” In such words, Martin Pfeiffer brought this past weekend’s events in Hawaii to a human level by reminding us of the unjust trauma caused by nuclear uncertainty. 1951 Teachers guide on "Duck and Cover" drills Born after the end of the Cold War, today’s youth did not experience the daily terror of “duck and cover” drills whilst growing up. In addition, they did not experience the multiple missile attack false alarms that rid ..read more
