Martin Fleck, Director, nuclear weapons abolition program |  Responsible Statecraft Lawmakers in the thrall of the defense lobby show their cards in proposed budget increases. 277 representatives have failed the test of leadership. Real leaders ensure that their decisions benefit the group, but the 277 fail to consider the dangerous risks posed by such astronomical military investments in terms of fueling a new arms race with our rivals. On July 13, the House of Representatives voted to defeat two amendments to cut the Pentagon budget put forward by Representatives Barbara Lee  (D-CA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI). In so doing, the House approved adding $37 billion to President Biden’s astronomical $813 topline military spending request. These were amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act. The first amendment would have reduced the overall Pentagon topline amount by $100 billion. That amendment received 78 votes for, with 350 against. The second would have rescinded $37 billion in additional Pentagon spendin ..read more

Starting TODAY, the House of Representatives will vote on amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2023, a mammoth bill to fund the Pentagon. President Biden requested $813 billion for the military. And last month the House Armed Services Committee (with a Democrat chair and majority) voted to ADD a whopping $37 billion on top of the President’s budget. The Pentagon budget is already the largest in the world — and it is larger than the sum of the next nine highest military budgets. This ridiculous level of military spending is not about defending the American people. It ..read more

Reps. Barbara Lee and Mark Pocan Introduce People Over Pentagon Act, Call for $100 billion cuts to U.S. Military Budget

On June 16, the Senate Armed Services Committee egregiously voted in a bipartisan manner to add an additional $45 billion to the already $813 billion defense budget request from President Biden. Then, last week the House Armed Services Committee followed suit — from a proposal from Democratic Rep. Jared Golden — and voted in a bipartisan manner to add $37 billion to the defense budget. These votes are absolutely unconscionable. The government refuses to adequately address the proximate security concerns of American taxpayers — like climate change, racism, education, lack of access to hea ..read more
