Hang gliders and bobcats!
Total Raptor Experience

Our falcons spent much of their flying time this week at cloudbase, buoyed up by spring thermals. While waiting for them on the cliffs and watching whales and dolphins frolic near the beach, I caught a couple pics of the legendary John Heiney soaring over La Jolla Shores in a classic hang glider. Meanwhile at home I finally caught my backyard bobcat out in daylight, guarding our shared realm from squirrels and rats. Looks like spring is finally here so hoping for a more regular schedule for our Falconry Experiences in La Jolla ..read more

East winds !

A week of crazy weather in San Diego, with strong winds from all directions and a touch of thunder and lightning, provided fun challenges for our soaring raptors. Here, Bunco the Lanner Falcon does a knife-edge turn along the rail of the Gliderport porch and a bit of cliff-diving, while Logan the Harris’s Hawk flies to a student in the lee of the ‘Port in a strong east wind. The adaptability of our birds and diversity of weather makes our falconry classes in La Jolla different every day, one of the things that keeps our birds, our handlers, and our students happy to be here every day ..read more

Observing our falconry experience

While most of our falconry students are all about physically interacting with our birds, some folks prefer to sit in the tower and watch our raptors buzz by. The birds are more than happy to oblige. Being an “observer” in our Falconry Experiences is really cheap - only $25! Here, Logan the Harris’s Hawk offers an observer a close-up flight demonstration while she relaxes on the airfield. Observers and participants can also enjoy our falcon antics, here Ali the Lanner Falcon soars right above us, providing a perfect shot for those most interested in photography. One of the best budget choices f ..read more

Another brilliant spring weekend for our Falconry Experience over the beach in La Jolla, California! While Ali and Bunco, two of our Lanner Falcon master pilots, soared between our falconry students and our raptor handlers, the paragliding instructors of Torrey Pines Gliderport provided their students with a different sort of soaring experience.  The coastal breeze offered variable flying conditions from really marginal to excellent right up to sunset. Also pictured, the art of fine dining courtesy of our Coronabug ..read more

Time with Bunco the Lanner Falcon
Total Raptor Experience

It was a quiet, meditative weekend of animal encounters along the San Diego beachside cliffs. Bunco the lanner falcon tied it off nicely by spending lots of quality time interacting with a lone student in a private falconry experience. The lack of crowds at the city park encouraged visits by some of our more shy wild raptor species, including a sharp-shinned hawk who flew within three of me at the cliff’s edge, sneaking along in search of tweety birds for lunch ..read more

Crazy 40mph crosswind for last week's Falconry experience, many thanks to our guests, who braved the wind and joined us in beautiful La Jolla!! Corona the Lanner falcon discovered some coastal thermals, soared up to cloud base, and spent the afternoon cruising all over north San Diego county. Our other hard-working birds provided education and entertainment for our students while we attempted to track Corona. He finally came home just before sunset, likely after realizing a really big storm was coming in fast. Having retrieved him a quarter mile from Torrey Pines Gliderport, he got to fly like ..read more
