The Evolution of Friendship

I am the only one of my friends of who isn’t married or in a relationship. Well, except with my passport. I started traveling in my early- 30s and I can’t quite seem to stop and settle down. As my friends got married and started their families, I jetted off and spent my 30’s travelling around southeast Asia.       Once I started traveling long-term, I realized I had to leave people behind. That didn’t mean my friendships ended badly, they just died a natural death. And I was fine with that. “People come into your life for a reason or a season,” was my long-time refrain.  I was in a differ ..read more

Sundays at Strawberry Hill, Jamaica

Jamaica is so much more than stunning white sand beaches. The Blue Mountains is home to Jamaica’s namesake world-famous coffee. One of my favourite places to visit is Strawberry Hill in Newcastle. A short 25 minutes ride from the cacophony of Papine Square transports you a world away. This idyllic mountain retreat is like no other in the Caribbean. At 3,000 feet above sea level, the temperature is cooler and the views are breathtaking from anywhere on the property. On one side the verdant mountains soar covered in mist and from the other, Kingston sparkles below. You can see as far as downtown ..read more

The annual New York Times Travel Show is the largest consumer based trade show in the United States. I had the pleasure of attending as part of the press team. Let’s face it, this is only travel show that would have me visit New York in January.     We all filed into four large conference rooms to hear the annual state of the travel union address by a hand selected panel. Ninan Chacko, CEO of the Travel Leaders Group; Alejandro Zozaya, CEO of Apple Leisure Group; Andrew Stuart CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line; Guy Young, Global Brand Engagement Officer of The Travel Corporation and Jennifer Tomba ..read more

Top 3 Cafes in Kingston

Although coffee production is strong in Jamaica, we are not coffee drinkers.  The soaring Blue Mountains are home to the world’s best coffee in my opinion. Jamaica has unique soils and growing conditions and techniques that contribute to a distinct taste and a wide variety sold in worldwide markets. Kingston is seeing an emergence of cafe culture targeting expats and returning residents who are used to popping into a cafe for a cup of joe and a slice of cake or a sandwich in big world cities. Here are three of my favourites and each has free WiFi. You’re welcome.   Cafe Blue, Sovereign Mall Wh ..read more

Top 6 Things I Ate at Jamaica Food & Drink Festival

The Jamaica Food and Drink Festival is a week-long dive into Jamaica’s culinary scene. Now in its third year, the festival has grown up and shown signs of maturing nicely. The high point for me, of course, is the food but also travelling around the different venues in Kingston where the event is spread out. I get to fall in love with Kingston’s nooks and crannies and discover new playgrounds. Needless to say, I ate a lot and my diet was on pause that week. Here are few of my favourite things.   Check out my full review in Griots Magazine.   Chef Andre Fowles oxtail mole with tun cornmeal chu ..read more

“Grab on to the corn stalk and turn left by the apple tree,” the old mad said to me. I was precariously perched in mud as I navigated my way along the muddy path in sandals. It was 6:30 in the evening and the sun had already set. I had just driven into to the village of Boundbrook in Port Antonio and already I was looking for the river to cool off. There was just enough light to see through the thick canopy along the river bed. The mosquitoes were already singing. “Tomorrow, this will be magnificent!” I thought. I slowly ascended and made my way along the gravel covered road and up the steps ..read more

Farmers’ Hands Across Jamaica

There is an honesty and purity in farmer’s hands. I have been visiting farms and markets across Jamaica and I found myself taking pictures of farmers’ hands. I was doing this instinctively. I felt that if I looked at their hands closely, I would understand who they were as a person. Each callous, corn and crack in skin told the story of hard work and dedication to their livelihood. Their hands speak of getting up before the sun, chopping weeding, yielding, unearthing and producing food, doing back breaking work under the boiling sun. I can’t think of few things as powerful as producing your ow ..read more

Kingston Eats: The Rib Kage

You know the food is good when you stop hearing words and start hearing sounds. Conversation naturally comes to a halt when your palate is shrouded in deliciousness. This was my experience at Rib Kage in Hope Zoo. Set underneath a beautiful gazebo surrounded by lush trees, the Rib Kage is a great environment for dining. Chef/Owner Gariel Ferguson has a new barbeque restaurant and it is a hit! My uncle and his business partner are visiting from London and sadly they hadn’t had a good food experience in Kingston. The horror!t When I saw Rib Kage’s postings on Instagram, I knew this was the pe ..read more

The Jamaica Biennial has been driving the focus of innovating and sustaining the views of contemporary artists. The exhibition investigates local voices and narratives, which international curators, residencies, and exhibitions are keen on learning. Organized and presented by the National Gallery in Kingston, the Jamaica Biennial, formerly the All Jamaica Art Exhibitions, started in 1938 as a private initiative. Today, the structure has largely changed and occurs every two years. This time frame gives artists more time to produce significant work.  The Jamaica Biennial taps into Jamaica’s cul ..read more
