David Roach said: After a day's rehearsal with the alto I liked the tuning and response but felt thoroughly un-engaged by the instrument, bored by it in fact, and gladly went back to my Selmer alto. Click to expand... Which Selmer alto do you play David ? I want to like my Serie III, but find the tuning peculiar higher up and not as easy to play as my Mk7. Rhys ..read more

I'm Lydia. I'm learning alto sax. I started seriously playing last year, when I got a music teacher. I practise every day for an hour or so and I'm also taking the music theory exams to support my understanding of music (currently on grade 3 now). I'm also learning the flute. Music has somewhat taken over my life since last year. My goal is to be competent enough to play with other musicians. I'm in my late 50's so I'd better get a move on ..read more

Reed swap/exchange - anyone interested?
Cafe Saxophone

I've recently been trying some different brands/cuts and strengths of reeds out, and the upshot is that I have various reeds that are completely unused just lying around, from part boxes and so on. These include:- Tenor Boston Sax Shop Black & Silver in a 3 Rigotti Gold Blue box 3L and 3M Wondered if anyone else is in a similar predicament with stuff they don't need and might want to swap? I'd be interested in 2.5s of the above and probably some others. Happy to do a trade etc ..read more

How will I feel about my sax after 1st general set up in over 15 years I wonder?

I have a tenor that had not long been overhauled when I got it. It's been used almost daily since then for an average of hour or so (sometimes 3 hours sometimes 10 minutes) daily I'd guess. Along the way I have been able to do bits like a cork replacement if one drops off, neck corks and cleaning and oiling. Perhaps I've done a bit more than that and maybe could of / should of done even more but never hit 'plenty of time' and 'feeling confident' at the same time go further. But its had some... Larger tip opening (and maybe shorter curve) can be more versatile
Cafe Saxophone
by Pete Thomas

I know this makes most sense when you think about mouthpieces with high/medium baffles but I get the feeling it applies generally. Perhaps this should be a poll but maybe some discussion first would be good. The point about baffles is that any mouthpiece that has a baffle and a small tip means the baffle itself is closer to the reed and so inherently brighter. And then not so easy to make less bright via embouchure. This is maybe over-generalising and the assumption is that baffles do not... Read more ..read more
