I had my first orchestra rehearsal yesterday – I was completely out of my depth! I'm an adult learner, not great at sight-reading, and it was all pretty scary. I'm trying to learn the pieces for next week. How would you approach the Ab and F arpeggios here? Over 3 strings? It's quite fast, so I wasn't sure whether string crossing trumps shifting. Thanks!

I'm an amateur cellist, I have been playing for about 7 months. I've changed and swapped out cellos a few times with the school, and the cello I received is difficult to tune. I can't get the C low enough and in tune without the string becoming very loose. Any solutions, tips or things I should know?
It's also worth noting that the string was tuned before perfectly fine by my teacher, and my C string is noticeably thicker than my G string, so it is unlikely that it's a G string. My pegs are fine, but it's likely that I am tuning to the wrong octave? (I would hope that after 7 months of playin ..read more

I am located in Singapore, where it is very humid (averaging 80%).
The cello is stored in a room that is air conditioned at night, away from the cold air’s main direction.
Dehumidifiers are used (2 thirsty hippos), especially after the neck broke in October 2023 (picture 2).
As it is still under warranty, I believe the repair for this damage is covered (picture 1).
The instrument was bought in Jan 2023, firsthand for about SGD 1000.
In the first repair, a screw was used. Reasonable, given how much it would actually cost for a more detailed repair (according to this friendly community out ..read more

Just out of curiosity. I recently saw someone saying that the wood tailpieces from Bois d'harmonie and Tempel are very good. He said such well-made wood tailpieces create better sound and resonance because it is lighter than plastic ones. Is this true? What do you think? If a wood tailpiece is significantly better, why do many cellists use plastic ones? I looked it up and found that famous soloists that everyone knows mostly use plastic tailpieces.

Hi, dear fellow musicians!
I am making parts for a symphony by a contemporary composer. The piece is traditional in sense of form and orchestration, but free tonal in style. I have been reading around and getting conflicting information so I thought I would turn to the core expertise to figure out how you fine cellists would want and expect your part to be in regard of using clef changes and ledger lines? How many ledger lines are you comfortable reading before changing between bass clef and alto clef, and alto clef and treble clef? And what are your stance to using 8va?
Edit: I wrote alto cl ..read more

Hi!
I’m trying to work around spending $$ on a new electric cello, as i see i can just get a pickup— Does anyone have any good recommendations? I’m looking to also change the timbre by either reverb or autotune pedals as I’d likely be performing with a band. I also don‘t know if this is a rig that can be contained to a cello, amp, and pickup or if other parts are needed. Either way, thanks in advance!

Got my first cello today, I got to practise for an hour or so earlier but I wanted to pick it back up and do a bit more… but I’m in a 1930’s UK terraced house, and it’s 8:20pm, with toddlers on one side and kids around 10-15 on the other ?
How has everyone done in terms of neighbours and how late you have gotten away with? I’m very aware that first few days, weeks… months(?) of practising isn’t too great to listen to and I don’t wanna subject them to that in the evenings
Obviously I know the obvious answers are “don’t practise at night” and “just talk to your neighbours” I’m more looking for ..read more
