Just wanted to share a recording we just finished: https://youtu.be/PYV_UX1roxQ?si=na_8cPdahyDfoM2n also on Spotify under Collective Brass. Over the past 3-4 years, I've been researching Swedish music, specifically music written for small groups of brass instruments. A lot of the material on this is album is being performed for the first time in hundreds of years. Of particular interest is the Bernhard Crusell Ten Pieces for Brass Instruments, which was composed around 1820 and could be one of the oldest known pieces written for chromatic brasses (the keyed bugle in particular). Playing music kind of outside of range

Decided to pick up this to take a break from de'articulation and im at the part where its notes above the staff and i was wondering if playing this as written would help my range. Similarly in concert band my director passed out i think grade 3.5 - 4 music and it kicked my button as far as rhythm but the gs and fs been easier (still inconsistent on attacks though) i can hit the notes but i cant play them in rapid sucession like the song plays them submitted by /u/MarionberryBasic8187 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Technique coach for advanced lead player?

Hi everyone- Hubby is an advanced lead player, has a degree in music, and has been gigging here and there for 20 years. He admits he's more of a "mouth pressure" player than a "breath compression" player, that he gets tired faster than he should, and could expand his range a few notes. His technique has been good until this year, when he suddenly got busier with a couple of new groups, and he's having endurance issues now. He wants to change his technique while still maintaining some facsimile of his gigging schedule if possible. Can anyone recommend a coach that can help him improve his tech ..read more

Why do my valves stick even when the horn is clean

I recently just got a 1925 holton revelation and I took it to a repair shop after I got it. When I got it back, the first valve was slow on the upstroke. The repair guy said to use higher viscosity oil for it and gave me some hettmans. Even after using it the valve is stick slow on the upstroke after like 5 minutes. The guy also said that it’s doing that because of the material used for the valves. Is that true or should I just bring it to a different repair shop? submitted by /u/Zephyr_Buv [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Mouthpieces differences.

Background before the actual question. I've been playing trumpet for many years and the only mouthpieces I've played are the 7C that came with my first horn, a 3C DW from when I started music school and 1.5C DW that I bought just because my friends told me that "I needed it to have a better sound" adding that some senior guy told me that "You should be capable to play anything with just one mouthpiece" and that sticked into my mind. (My mistake was to blindly follow that pair of advices without really talk about it with my teacher but he was very patient and let me do this little investigatio ..read more

Hello! I've obviously got a few things in mind but looking for more suggestions. I would like to put together a playlist of just tons of great trumpet recordings. I'd like to get as many styles as possible just to show my students what is possible and what people are doing. Also as diverse as possible, so if you know some really great players and recommended recordings of people who aren't just white dudes I'd appreciate you sending those my way! I'm down for really anything, I know there's a lot out there but because of that it's hard to narrow down. So send me some of your favorite recordin ..read more

Thinking about re-learning to play

I played trumpet in school up until high school when I decided I didn't want to do it anymore. 30+ years later and I was just visiting my family and had a try on my old trumpet, which my sister had refurbished for my nephew, and I was surprised to find that although I've forgotten all the notes I was otherwise able to make a decent sound. I'm thinking about trying to pick it up again just for fun with a cheap used one off eBay and some online lessons to refresh my memory on the basics. Not sure what to look for in a used one though - the one my nephew is an Olds Special that belonged to my au ..read more

Torelli sites in Bologna

Hi All, Retired trumpet player here. I'm spending a day trip in Bologna next month. Wondering if anyone out there knows of any Giuseppe Torelli sites in Bologna other than San Petronio? (Or other trumpet related sites?) I love visiting obscure composer sites or gravesites but couldn't find Torelli's grave location. I found one reference but it wasn't much help- maybe it was a translation or user error related issue. Much appreciation if anyone has any leads? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/the_mr_wayne [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
