As the title suggests, I think I would prefer a geyer style as that is what i am used to playing with although I am open to trying things out. I am currently playing on a rented yamaha 567 btw. Thank you. submitted by /u/Opening-Basket-7574 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Any recommendations for an online horn teacher?

I played horn in high school but haven’t touched it in over 20 years. I recently rented one so that I can get back into playing. I am moving to a small town with no horn teacher and the closest one is over 2 hours away. So it seems online is my only option. Any suggestions for a good online teacher? I appreciate it. submitted by /u/JCPY00 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

French Horn - Upper Lip Tear Drop - Any Issues
Reddit | Horn for all your horn needs

I'm considering playing french horn (I already play flute at a high level, orchestra, etc. most of my life), and was wondering if having a tear drop presents any potential issues/challenges to playing horn truly well (range, flexibility, tone). I otherwise have a thin upper and lower lip. Playing flute, ideally you don't want a teardrop, but you can work around it eventually, as there are many professionals with a side embouchure like mine, but frankly it's more straight forward without it! Starting a new instrument, I prefer to row with the current, lol. submitted by /u/PerformanceWorldly51 ..read more

I can’t play in tune

When I’m playing my regular F (f3), I can play it in tune usually, but then my high F (f4) is always very sharp. I tried to use my embouchure to fix it but it doesn’t work. If i pull out my tuning slide, my regular F becomes flat. Are there any tips I can use to fix this problem? Should i use my hand positioning more? submitted by /u/Wandafish7 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

King 1160 vs 1170?

Interested in any information someone might have regarding the differences between these two models. It looks like the 1170 went into production a few years after the 1160. Are they basically the same horn with just a change in the model number? There is so little info on these horns since they are no longer made and there doesn't appear to be a large market for them, so anything you can share would be great. submitted by /u/CJenkins69 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Returning after a long time. Any advice?

As the title says I'm getting back into playing horn after nearly a decade away. I loved playing horn when I was in school, but gave it up when I went to college. Recently I was able to come across an old beater horn and I decided to get back into it. I know my embouchure is pretty much back to square zero but I've still got the muscle memory from playing for about 7 years. Any advice on how to pick up the instrument again? Things you wish you could've learned from the very beginning? I feel like I've been handed a great opportunity to start fresh, and I'd appreciate any advice for a novice p ..read more

Neck Pain when playing

I am 60. Started playing F-horn again around age 52. The past few years I have started having terrible pain at around C3 or C4 on my neck on the left side. It seems related to my Levator Scapulea on that side. I have tried different things (posture, resting my left arm on something), but I think it might be embrasure pressure. Even gentle pressure seems to aggravate that area. Does anyone else experience this? How did you treat it? I find that I can make it about 1-hour into a concert or rehearsal before the pain gets truly annoying. thanks for any advice/guidance. John submitted by /u/Reddi ..read more

Abilene Conn 8D vs single horn in B flat?

I might be able to get hold of a serviced Conn 8D from 1978, for ca €1800. I understand it must be made in Abilene. I've understood that these are generally looked down upon compared to the Elkhart and newer Eastlake versions. But are they so bad they should be avoided at all costs? I have played for about a year and I have a single Horn in F. I'm kind of having a rough time, although I still feel like I'm progressing. Switching to a Horn in B flat seems like it would make my life easier but I don't know if I should go for one of those now, when I'll likely want to upgrading de to a double ho ..read more
