The 2023 ADRS National Bassoon and Oboe Competition will be held at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane on August 20th. There are competition sections for all levels, from beginners to advanced, also “Weekend Warriors” and chamber music. Please note that you may compete online in the Open Section. The winner of the 2022 Peter Musson Memorial Prize is 18-year-old Joshua Elrom. Joshua is currently a year 12 student and competed in the Elite section of the ADRS National Competition. Should I be Making My Own Bassoon Reeds? Bassoon students are not infrequently told they “should be making their own reeds”, the arguments in favour being, 1. You are at a disadvantage if you are dependent upon a favourite reedmaker who may retire, or fail to deliver on time for that important concert/audition/exam. 2. JOINT PAIN A common issue with bassoons is joints that jam so the instrument won’t come apart without a struggle. With the change in seasons you may also experience the opposite problem; joints that are too loose, so the bassoon actually threatens to fall apart. This all goes back to the fact that bassoons are (almost always) made of maple, which is quite a porous wood and thus affected by changes in humidity, especially when the instrument is new.
