I recently finished reading Wilhelm Heckel Six Generations Dedicated to Music. And as I noted in my YouTube Video- I had a slight challenge following a timeline of events. The book follows innovations in relation to each family member. But many of the family members overlap in their work at the company. As I read the book I built a timeline of events to aid in my personal comprehension and synthesis of materials. I am sharing my timeline so that it may serve as an aide in your bassoon studies and personal enjoyment while you read the book. Cheers! Eryn HECKEL COMPANY TIMELINE: Based on E ..read more

I love a good bassoon warm up. On busy days at the end of the semester when I don’t have time to work on new literature, my practice time is regulated to Warm Ups. Sometimes this is all there is time for in-between final classes, grading papers, and lessons. Warm Ups keep my technique strong, remind me to breathe low and deep and keep my embouchure in tip-top shape. This week I am sharing my favorite Warm Ups that I and my students have been doing in our daily practice sessions. Before I create my videos and blogs I speak with other professional bassoonists and bounce ideas off of them ..read more

My Cane Collection has been built over the past 20+ years of Reed Making. In my collection I have Variations of Cane from Different Vendors and Various Styles (Gouged, Gouged and Profiled, and Gouged Shaped and Profiled).  From top to bottom: Gouged, Gouged and Profiled and Gouged Shaped and Profiled.  Most of the cane in my collection I haven’t talked about on My Blog or YouTube Channel because most viewers do not have access to Vintage Cane. As an avid viewer/reader of Blogs and YouTube videos- There’s nothing worse than seeing a cool product and realizing that it is Vintage o ..read more

In creating the Affordable Double Reed Instrument Series my goal has been to find the best  instrument to meet your musical needs. As a firm believer in the importance of music education- this series is designed to help put the best bassoon available in a buyer’s hand. My previous post focused on Mass Market New Bassoons for $5000 or Less. The post was designed for band directors, college class woodwinds courses, and buyers needing consistent high quality instruments in a hurry. Brand New Nobel and Fox Renard instruments are available for purchase with the ease of a phone call and a credi ..read more

The number one comment and follow up question I receive on my YouTube Channel is… “I want to play bassoon but my school doesn’t have one. Do you know of an affordable quality bassoon option for starting out?” The key words for everyone is AFFORDABLE QUALITY. Affordable: The starting prices may feel like a lot of money but when bassoon price options run from $2000-$40,000- this is the lower price end. Most families of bassoon beginners are understandably hesitant to spend over $5000 for a bassoon beginner who may not practice or want to play in 6 months. And due to the expensive production ..read more

When I set out to create my Affordable Instrument Series- I had no idea the challenges I would encounter Trying to find Quality Bassoons to Compare. It was a stark contrast to my experiences creating the (already posted) Oboe and English Horn Blogs and YouTube Videos. I believe the affordable prices of Oboes and English Horns (compared to Bassoons) made them accessible. Guest Erica Howard of the Atlanta Ballet with Handfuls of Oboes! In filming the oboe comparisons Erica and I were lucky- many oboists keep plastic instruments on hand for outdoor concerts. We were able to borrow ..read more

The number one challenge I’ve experienced as a double reed music educator has been finding quality affordable instruments for students. Because this is a challenge (not just for me) but for every double reed beginner and teachers worldwide, over the next few weeks my blog is dedicated to discussions about the best Beginner-Intermediate Oboes, English Horns and Bassoons. Many parents of beginner musicians will find the money for a flute, a trumpet or trombone at introductory beginning band events. The thought of parting with $500-$1000 is a stretch but most families will find a way to make it w ..read more
