The Golden Keys – 2021

I wanted to wait till games were fully open again, and then things got busy but, finally, here are the Golden Keys for 2021. 2021 wasn’t the year we wanted it to be. While it looked for a long time like we might be moving back towards something resembling normality, we closed out the year with things taking a step back for most people. Even now, in mid-2022 some companies are still seeing a significant reduction in bookings. To escape room owners and employees everywhere, my thoughts are with you – I hope this year has brought you a smoother journey and continues to do so. Those restrictions d ..read more

Paris Escape Room Tourist Guide

Having now played over 50 games in Paris, I think it’s time I put together a post on my recommendations for the city. It’s worth saying, as with pretty much all large, North-Western-European cities, that it’s expensive to play as a two and even a team of three might seem steep, unless you’re used to major city prices. That said, it’s a beautiful city to wander around, almost all of the games are near the centre and with Eurostar, it’s particularly appealing if you want a quick get away or are trying to avoid plane travel. If you want to see all the articles that I’ve written about games in th ..read more

In April 2022, we took a four-day trip to Paris, playing 22 games and taking the total escape rooms I’ve played in the city to over 50. This is the round-up of the second half of a trip we took to Paris in April 2022. Over four days we played 22 games, taking the total escape rooms I’ve played in the city to over 50 – watch out for a wrap-up of the best of the city in a separate article. One Hour – Lost Asylum, Very Bad Night and Abattoir If you’re wanting to play some of the more puzzle-filled experiences in Paris, then I think One Hour is a great destination to head to. They seemed to ..read more

In April 2022, we took a four-day trip to Paris, playing 22 games and taking the total escape rooms I’ve played in the city to over 50.  I’ve already posted dedicated articles for the two highlight venues: Deep Inside and Pandore & Associés, so this post aims to summarise the other games we played on the first half of the trip. Crack the Egg – Chinatown, Professor Tyschen, Shelter and Dark Egg We played all four of Crack the Egg‘s games on this visit and had fun across all of them. There’s a fun mechanic across the first three that sees an extra puzzle hidden within each room, if you ..read more

Paris Escape Review: Deep Inside – The Magician of Paris and Funhouse
The Logic Escapes Me

Deep Inside describes itself as the only escape room in the world located 30m underground. I’ll leave you to judge whether that claim is true, but it hints at the premise of their whole experience: that you’re entering the “City of Martyrs”, an underground haven for the underclass of Paris. I’m always drawn in by escape room venues that focus on world-building, but few have gone quite so far as this. From the moment you turn up at the bookshop, it’s clear that they’re going to do something just a little bit different and, before you know it, you’ll find yourself walking the streets of the und ..read more

Paris Escape Review: Pandore & Associés – Règlement de Contes (Fairytale Regulations)

Pandore & Associés is one of the  most well-respected escape room companies in Paris, so I’d been looking forward to our visit and was keen to find out what had impressed players so much. It’s clear from the moment you step through the door that they believe in immersion. You aren’t at an escape room: you’ve come to a warehouse for fairytale objects, and you’re not about to play a game: you’re there for a job interview. The person who greets you doesn’t break character, greeting you in that context and providing you with all the briefing you need while staying within the story. I fin ..read more

Escape from the Room (Epsom): Chamber of Champions
The Logic Escapes Me

One of the things that I really like about Escape from the Room is that they don’t just stick to a single genre. Old Maid Millie, Cabin in the Woods, Enigma Express and Hex are all very different, and Chamber of Champions is no exception. While we played it as a single team, it’s set up as a versus experience, with the winning team capturing the crown. Not only that, but the separation between the teams is just a thin mesh. With the space being relatively small, it must be an incredibly tense experience as you’re fully aware of each victory of the other team, not to mention worried about your ..read more

Escape from the Room (Epsom): The return of Old Maid Milly
The Logic Escapes Me

Back in 2016, Escape from the Room opened their first game, Old Maid Milly. I’ve got fond memories of my first encounter with everyone’s favourite cat-loving old lady. Part of that was the charm of a true enthusiast building a game in their home but it was also good puzzle flow to back it up. Since then, they’ve opened up a slew of other games across several venues, so I was curious to see how they’d progressed in the meantime, especially with a game that was a follow-on from their original story. As soon as you walk into the room, you can see the step-up in decoration since that original game ..read more

Adrenaline Escape (Wigan): The Vault, Nebula and Kidnapped
The Logic Escapes Me

[Note that these reviews are from plays in late summer] Adrenaline Escape is a family-run business in the heart of Wigan which delivers a series of fun games. We played a couple of their experiences – Labyrinth and Laboratory – before the pandemic and enjoyed them enough to sign up for another series of visits on a trip a few months ago, playing The Vault, Nebula and Kidnapped. The Vault [3.5 stars] We accidentally booked this game on the day it opened to the public. I’d generally try to avoid that, but we were in the area and it was available, so we thought we’d give it a go and hadn’t reali ..read more

Cave Escape (Nottingham): Monuments
The Logic Escapes Me
by The Logic Escapes Me

Cave Escape‘s unique selling point, unsurprisingly, is that their games are set in a cave. Given that setting, I was curious what theme they’d choose for their second outing. It seems a significant constraint not just in terms of the physical space available but also with the type of story that sits well against that stone backdrop. Monuments feels like the perfect choice, sending you deep into the Austrian mountains to retrieve looted artifacts before the mine where they’re hidden is blown up. And the set more than delivers on that potential: it makes great use of the cave to transport you t ..read more
