My grandmother and I were very close.  She lived only a few minutes away and I either spoke or visited with her almost daily. Since I was one of her younger grandchildren, I never knew Gram without hearing loss.  Over time it became increasingly difficult to converse with Gram, so she always wore her hearing aids. One day I took her for an audiology appointment at Bloomsburg University.  I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the field. I was inspired by the many services in addition to hearing aids that are within an Audiologist’s scope of practice. At that point, I kne ..read more

I did not always know I wanted to be an Audiologist. After graduating high school, I knew I wanted to go to school for something that I found meaningful where I could help people be the best version of themselves in some way. That is how I ended up attending West Chester University for the major Communication Sciences and Disorders to become a Speech Pathologist. I found the classes about speech pathology to be interesting, but they never felt quite right. It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I took my first audiology class and realized that was what I was meant to do. I remember enj ..read more

How Music Can Promote Language & Literacy Skills It’s well known that we speak because we hear, and as we hear. It is a powerful concept that is shaped by having good speech and language models during the first few years of life. Music is also a language and uses symbols (instead of words) to make sounds that turn into a larger message. So, one may ask.... does music have any connection with learning speech and language? The answer is yes! But how? Musical activities increase a child’s listening skills, such as learning about timing and pitch. These skills are linked to a child’s developin ..read more

ENT and Allergy Specialists is now offering Inspire therapy, a breakthrough obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for those who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. It occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throug ..read more

Why Did I Become an Audiologist? I studied Psychology as an undergraduate at Loyola University Maryland and developed an interest in child development, specifically the development of communication. From there, I wanted to pursue a PhD in Developmental Psychology. Over two years I applied to roughly 16 programs and didn’t have luck getting in, despite getting interviews. Of course, back then I was upset, but I know now it was a blessing in disguise. By my third year of applications, I decided to complete post-baccalaureate coursework in Communication Sciences and Disorders, which I figured wo ..read more
