Below are some of the ways to d ..read more

The best ways to measure the success of a law firm SEO program are below, in order from least effective to most effective: • Content Pages Added to Website • Keyword Rankings • Website Visitors (aka Traffic) • Leads • Qualified Leads • Signed Cases • Revenue In other words, the number of signed cases is a much better measurement of success than the number of pages added to the website. Similarly, the number of qualified leads generated is a much better indicator of success than keyword rankings. Notwithstanding, almost all SEO companies focus on rankings and visitor traffic. They send fancy re ..read more

While some law firms over-analyze marketing investment decisions (paralysis by analysis) and never spend enough money, the great majority fail to spend sufficient time answering critical questions that ensure a balanced and effective mix of business development products and services. Below is a brief outline of the decision-making process I recommend firms use for large marketing investments.  (Small ones – such as a donation to a charitable cause – don’t require analysis.) 1.  Review the current one-page marketing budget to see how much the firm is spending monthly on marketing serv ..read more

I recently started a new Google paid ad campaign for a client and sent her the below email, which is something I’ve been doing to address issues that commonly arise with new programs.  I hope it’s helpful to anyone starting a search engine marketing program for their law firm. The Google ad program is set-up and you’ve actually already gotten a click.  I should have the website tracking program in place shortly, too. I’d like to share a few thoughts and encourage you to review carefully.  They are based on a lot of experience and will help us share the same expectations, which i ..read more

What would happen to your business if you became incapacitated and died in the next 14 days? What impact would it have on your loyal customers or clients? What challenges would your family face?  Would they receive calls from angry customers demanding that work be completed, deposits refunded, and answers be provided about what they should do next?  Would your loved ones be forced to deal with lawsuits over unearned retainers or claims of professional malpractice? No one likes to think about these things, but this is exactly the situation many find themselves in during the Coronaviru ..read more

The following article focuses on potential discounts for existing clients.  I will be publishing a post about the wisdom of reducing new client fees in a couple days. A partner at a long-time law firm client of my consulting business called me yesterday and asked if she should include a discount on her invoices during the Coronavirus pandemic.  It so happens that she does advisory and transactional work for a number of small and medium sized businesses.  Some of her clients pay a monthly flat-rate retainer while others have been happy to pay her $395 per hour rate for any work that needs compl ..read more

Is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) Membership Worth It for Law Firms?

A 4-attorney law firm client of mine recently asked me if a Better Business Bureau (BBB) membership is something he should continue paying for.  His cost is $600 per year.  Below is my answer, which I thought may be helpful to others. I view the BBB as mostly window dressing and a conversion tool as opposed to something that will generate leads.  And I think you have a lot of that already with Super Lawyers, AVVO, MH AV, Legal Elite, etc.  So I don’t believe you miss a ton by dropping it. On the other hand, the BBB is more recognizable to the average person than the legal awards and very few l ..read more
