I am following a tutorial made by sea lemon on how to make a text block. My intention is to make a sketchbook that lays flat (and has a spine, so no coptic stitch).
I notice, in her video, that she uses an awl to pierce approximately 7 holes in every signature. Is that many holes necessary for a text block? Do they help make the book lay flat?
I'm an amateur bookbinder, so if I'm not clarifying anything, let me know.

I assumed this textbook would be hardcover or at least a proper paperback, but it appears to just be tape bound with thin plastic covers front and back. It isn’t an inexpensive or widely available textbook so I’d like to make it more durable and I’m relatively confident I can do something myself which would be a considerable improvement. The cost to have it professionally bound into a hardcover would be a bit exorbitant for me.
I’ve watched paperback —> hardcover DIY tutorials, which usually entail removal of the paperback covering and sometimes entail retaining the original covers. I ..read more

This is a second hardback book I bought like this, I mean why even include the cover if it's unglued. I don't know what to do with it cause I think it might shrivel up when I glue it together to the book.

Anyone know why I keep marking the paper like this when I'm trimming the text block? Blade is clean, ruler is clean. Is it a friction thing?

Looking to protect ink printed on glossy paper, the prints look awesome, make a great softcover material, just worried about wearing out the cover quickly. Considering using Duck Self=Adhesive Laminate which i've used on board game stuff with moderate success.
How do professional printing companies achieve the coating on their softcovers?

Hi, I'm a newbie... about to start leather binding a book for the first time as a birthday present, and I only have materials for one book, so I wanted to check if this guide I'm planning to follow is OK, before I make a big mistake...

If there's anything that I should bear in mind/any other advice I should know about I would really appreciate it, thank you :)
