Just generally pondering on this question given all of the typewriter imagery that Taylor Swift is using in her promotion of The Tortured Poets Department. There was a giant QR code mural painted in Chicago today in typewriter font to promote her upcoming album release. My first electric typewriter, 2nd SCM. The clutch spring is worn out, so it just backspaces forever. The set screw to take off the pulley is pretty much stripped and the only thing keeping me from fixing this $15 thrift find (other than a new spring). The Allen keys I had fit, but just a little too small. Same with my torx wrenches. Any tips or something? Also there is a small bolt that fell out when I took off the case, around the right side. I recently got me an Olympia SM3 from marketplace. It has elite typeface in 11 pitch, and comes with m/m and ø in a German keyboard layout. The tab pieces were grinding against the body, so I had to exchange the rubber bushings that carry the mechanics in the body. This lifted the machine in its body and it doesn't touch anywhere now. The backspace key didn't work at all, it was frozen in place. I followed the pushrods through and found a lever stuck on its pinion. After a little wiggle and a drop of oil, this moved. I just purchased an unused Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter (it looks fantastic) and now need to buy a new ink ribbon. I noticed that nylon ribbons are available on Amazon for the Lettera 32 for about €18. I called a local typewriter shop that sells and repairs vintage typewriters, and he told me they sell high quality silk ribbons for €25. So I have two questions: As a newbie does it make more sense to buy a red/black spool, or an all black spool? Should I go for nylon or silk? I got my first typewriter a year ago (a Hermes 3000 'Square-top' HP-2/66 from 1968) and just fell in love with it. It's been a highly rewarding experience restoring it (at least as well as my abilities afforded). I've since bought and restored a second Hermes 3000 ('Round-top' HP-2/58 from 1962), and recently a Hermes Baby (the '1960' model, though I think mine was manufactured in 1961).
