In this blog post, I will analyze the palo flamenco called guajira. This palo belongs to the group called Cantes de Ida y Vuelta (Roundtrip Songs) because they have ties to American genres that were adapted to flamenco. During colonial times, Seville and Havana were very close because of the established commercial route between the two. Ships from Spain left loaded with highly desired European goods and returned with silver from Mexico, pearls from Venezuela, plus porcelain and silk from China.  With the goods exchange came the cultural and art exchange, which in flamenco, res ..read more

Today, I will look into flamenco style called caracoles and how to dance it. Caracoles belongs to a family of cantiñas out of which the most famous is alegría. In contrast to alegrías among which we differentiate several different styles, there is only one style of caracoles, and even though there is only one style we still use a plural form caracoles (versus singular caracol) to describe it. Finally, unlike few other styles, caracoles only has a handful of letras to choose from.  To start, I will analyze one way to dance caracoles and its dance structure based ..read more

Once flamenco dancers achieve a certain level of technique, they want to be able to perform with live music. This is when the question comes: what is the basic structure of the palo* I want to perform? Many students, throughout their classes are only taught choreography without explanation of the traditional structure, to recorded music, or without even knowing what each part is called. To be able to dance with live music, we need the knowledge of the basic structure, know what the structure elements are, understand cante and letra structure of the palo, plus guitar melodies ..read more

Finding information about where to study flamenco in Seville, can be tricky. I remember the first time I went in 2009, and there were hardly any information you could access online about flamenco schools. Most of the information was accessible by the word of mouth only. Nowadays, most schools post their information online, but not all of them have websites and it still takes an insider to know where to look for this information. My guide is organized by barrios (neighborhoods) of Sevilla. San Julián Flamencodanza Address: C/ Fray Diego de Cádiz 21 flamencodanza.com ..read more

Buying your first flamenco shoes can be quite tricky. You can of course start taking classes with character shoes or street shoes with a wide heel, however, you can only learn how to create percussive footwork if you have flamenco shoes. There isn't just one model, one heel and one design for all. There are many options and here is a rough guide on what to choose. My favorite flamenco dance shoe maker is Roberto Garrudo from Seville and most of the prices and examples that you will find in my blog come from their website. 1. Professional or semi ..read more
