I have been sharing a lot with friends, colleagues, and clients recently, the life giving importance I have found in being completely embedded in open community during this season of life. In short — being deeply connected in relationships with others where I can be completely vulnerable. I wrote about this briefly a couple of weeks ago, and wanted to share a bit more in this video. I hope you find this helpful, and prayers to you in finding this type of community to do life with ..read more

Moving my body has been one of the most important things I have done in my life to help with the reduction of my anxiety, depression, and just overall wellness in my mental health. There is a lot of good research on this topic, and running comes up quite a bit in the literature. I posted briefly on this topic. If you are struggling with anxiety and depression, a good place to start may be looking for any opportunity to move your body today. Go for a short walk. Do some jumping jacks in your bedroom. Jump in your pool and do a couple of laps. Start somewhere, and you may be surprised how consis ..read more

I don’t think it will come as any surprise to anyone if I tell you that running can help you with your anxiety and depression. Or better put, movement of the body helps your mental health. I can speak to this personally as runner who has been running my entire life for fun, and in organized races since I was a kid. And I can testify to the sheer amount of clients I work with, who see a dramatic shift for the positive in their mental health after they start running — or just moving their bodies. I talk about running a lot, but in order to not be dogmatic about this, it really doesn’t matter wha ..read more

An Encouragement to “Journal”

“I’m not really the type of person who likes to journal.” “I don’t like to write, or put my thoughts onto paper.” “I just don’t have anything to write.” These are pretty typical responses I hear from clients when I broach the subject of journaling as a practice. And I can totally understand their sentiment. Plus, to make the recommendation to someone to journal, without any specificity to structure and guidelines, can feel like a very daunting endeavor. Regardless of all the common and understandable objections, I have come to believe — more strongly than ever, that journaling may be one of th ..read more

It would be too much to say that I have been on a quest for the best breath work practices for anxiety. But it is true to say, that over the course of the last 10-12 years I have tested out and practiced all kinds of differing breathing patterns to help my anxiety. And to help the anxiety that my clients have experienced. I have tried varying apps for years such as Headspace, Calm, Breathwrk … just to name a few (I have clients who also love the biblical mediations of Abide). I have tried different patterns such as Box Breathing, 4-7-8 Breathing, etc. All of these apps and practices have broug ..read more

Rhett Smith 139: Transforming Our Anxiety — Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Earlier this year I was really impacted by Michael Easter’s book The Comfort Crisis. And I think what stood out to me the most was really the idea that in order to grow, one must work on becoming more comfortable with the uncomfortable — and I liked how he connected it with the idea of progressive overload that we often find in the exercise/strength literature. When I came across that it really resonated with my work on anxiety. Mainly — that for people to really transform their anxiety it is a process of taking their insight and putting it into practice — but that transition is really uncomfo ..read more

n this episode I share with you some lessons I’ve recently learned in hiring an endurance running coach to help me train and complete the UTMB trail race this year in the Alps. I talk about the importance of hiring a coach (therapist, executive coach, etc) to help with: coming up with a flexible plan to create change and accomplish your goals. the importance of accountability that comes with hiring a coach and how it increases discipline, provides correction and creates an environment for practice. the benefit of receiving encouragement in a coaching relationship/therapeutic relationship. con ..read more

A decision I made several years back, was that if books that I was reading, kept referring to one author/thinker, etc., time and time again — then I needed to go read that person. More than likely, this person would be the original source of much of the work others have built off. And why just keep reading what others say about a topic, then when you can go to the original source and researcher of the topic. This was the case with the concept of “flow”. A topic that is written about in tons of books on leadership and performance. The book is Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly ..read more
