We had a Wacky Whale Wednesday with Fin whales and dolphins sighted on both tours! We began our morning tour with a small pod of ~5-7 inshore bottlenose dolphins feeding in front of the Ocean Beach pier. We continued on and a couple miles from shore we encountered a dense fog bank engulfing the Privateer! We got to the drop-off and followed that to the south when we found a huge clearing with ~7-miles of visibility! We searched the area and after picking up a couple of Mylar balloons, we sighted a Fin whale! It circled the area, likely feeding! After the fourth breathing cycle, we spotted ano ..read more

Is the ocean a massive soup bowl teeming with life? We had such an action packed day today from start to FINish! During our morning trip, we encountered about ~150 long-beaked common dolphins scattered throughout the trip. We also sighted a Common Minke whale! We got several looks with the Minke whale. It is the second smallest baleen whale, after the dwarf sperm whale. Soon after, we saw a massive spout from a Fin whale! We hung out with the Fin whale for multiple breath cycles as well. Fin whales are the second largest baleen whale after the mighty Blue whale! Our afternoon trip was just as ..read more

We had a FIN-OMENAL day with sightings of 4 Fin whales and hundreds of Common dolphins seen on our single trip! We set out to the west and found a pod of ~100 Long-beaked Common dolphins feeding under diving birds. They were very boat friendly and cruised beside us in our wake and rode the bow. We got out into deeper water and sighted robust, tall spouts on the horizon. There were 2 Fin whales hanging out side-by-side while another one popped up nearby and then another further north of us. They synchronized their breaths coming up for air after about 10min. We hung out with the pair and got t ..read more

We had a FIN-tastic Sunday with a Fin whale sighted on both of our morning and afternoon tours! We sighted Long-beaked Common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins too! During our morning trip, we set out to the west and spotted scattered Long-beaks all around in about 100-ft of water. We got into 1700-ft of water and spotted a fluke print right in front of us. We slowed it down and sure enough a Fin whale came up for a breath! It surfaced for 5-7 breaths and went down for 10-min dives. We spotted two more huge spouts to the west. On our way in we spotted more Commons and a handful of inshore Bott ..read more

Saturday April 13, 2024 We had a great start to our whale watching adventure this morning with an even better FINish! For our morning trip, we headed out southwest towards the 9-mile bank. We first encountered ~50 long-beaked common dolphins. The LB common dolphins led us to the edge of the 9-mile bank. We were about 12 miles away from Mission Bay at our furthest point! We sighted a spout and followed it for a few breath cycles, leading us to FIN whale galore! Before we knew it, we were surrounded by 3 other fin whales! We got great looks at 4 individual fin whales and saw two more spouts in ..read more

Friday, April 12, 2024 Breeeeeeaaccchhhhh! We had a juvenile breaching Humpback whale! On our afternoon trip we caught up with a Gray whale just outside of the Mission bay jetties. We observed it cruising into the bay! We continued out to the west and just minutes from leaving the jetties, we sighted a spout and then the big splashes! We sighted it only ~150-feet of water, within a mile from shore! We witnessed the Humpback breaching over 30 times, we lost count! We got to see it pec slap, tail lob and chin slap over and over! It was an incredible day with lots of amazing behaviors that we cr ..read more

Thursday, April 11, 2024 We had an action packed trip with a Gray whale cow/calf pair, a Fin whale, and Common dolphins sighted! We set out of Mission Bay and caught up with a fast moving pod of ~80 Long-beaked Common dolphins! They were traveling north about a mile from shore. We continued on and spotted a short puffy spout just inside the drop-off. It was a northbound Gray whale cow/calf pair! The Gray whale calf was swimming in mom’s slipstream and would surface about 3x more than the mom. We noticed the pair began to travel toward the coast, and the mom lifted her tail and waved goodbye ..read more

Witness a rare sight! We saw a gray whale feeding in Mission Bay We had an incredible trip today full of wildlife! Right off the bat we encountered a gray whale feeding in mission bay. We could even see the mud plumes it was leaving on the surface from feeding along the bottom! Once we headed out into the ocean we first found a feeding frenzy of birds and a few long-beaked common dolphins. We then ventured out to the southwest and right on the edge of the 9 mile bank we had a fin whale pop up just a couple hundred yards off our port bow! We got great looks at this massive whale as it was presu ..read more

Saw Hundreds of Dolphins! San Diego Long-Beaked Common Dolphin Tour We were rockin’ and rollin’ on the Pacific with Common dolphins galore! We pushed through the waves to the west. After reaching the drop-off we sighted some splashes that weren’t white caps! We found a huge spread out pod of Long-beaked Common dolphins! They were everywhere we looked and totally surrounded us! They all seemed to be on a mission headed to the west, northwest. We kept moving to deeper water and made it to 12-miles from shore, in ~2000 feet of water! We couldn’t go any further so flipped it around and enjoyed the ..read more
