Savory gluten-free breakfast muffins: a fantastic option for when you’re short on time or need something portable. We’re so used to grabbing sweet things in the morning – and believe me, I’m no stranger to this – yet savory breakfasts are common in most areas of the world, plus they often allow us to gobble more vegetables and protein. I espouse the virtues of savory breakfasts so much I feel like a broken record here, but I’m still going to repeat how awesome they are. Savory muffins are particularly awesome because they are convenient, tasty, customizable and easily carried in a purs ..read more

Are You Making These Gluten-Free Diet Mistakes?
Sondi Bruner | Freelance Writer and Holistic Nutritionist

I have been following a strict gluten-free diet for a decade. Despite what the news headlines tell me about gluten-free diets being ‘dangerous’ for non-celiacs, I continue to eat gluten-free and continue to reap the health benefits. Still, I can see where researchers are coming from when they claim gluten-free diets are potentially harmful or, at the very least, neutral because there are many people who jump in to the gluten-free diet without being thoughtful or careful about what they eat. Are you making one (or more) of these gluten-free diet mistakes? Here are some common pitfalls people e ..read more

Everything Bagel Vegan Cream Cheese

Everything bagel vegan cream cheese – the recipe I didn’t know I wanted and am now obsessed with. I’ve always made my go-to vegan cream cheese recipe and sometimes when you have a favourite, you don’t stray much from the path. Now I’m totally going to push my traditional vegan cream cheese recipe aside for this new everything bagel version. It’s tangy, it’s creamy and it’s versatile – great with crackers (everything bagel crackers if you please), gluten-free toast, flatbreads, sandwiches, veggies or lettuce wraps. This recipe does have a slight coconut oil flavour, as coconut oil is ..read more

Sweet Potato and Apple Soup

Hiya! How is your autumn going so far? Daylight savings has ended here in Vancouver, which means you can spend more time inside slurping this sweet potato and apple soup. I’ve had this soup on repeat for the last few weeks. It’s a lovely vehicle for seasonal produce (I was thrilled to find local sweet potatoes at the farmers market!) and I can always get on board with eating more of these delectable root vegetables. I’ve often made butternut squash and apple soup, but never thought to try the sweet potato – apple combo and it truly is a creamy, amazing balance of sweetness without being ..read more

Lavender Honey Coconut Milk

This recipe was initially intended to be dairy-free ice cream; however, as I taste tested after the mixture chilled I realized I just wanted to drink it, not transform it into ice cream. And so my new favourite dairy-free milk was born. Let’s talk about lavender for a moment. It’s not a plant I ever used or would even have been able to recognize until I was well into my 30s. Now, I have a cornucopia of lavender  – lavender essential oils, lavender tea, culinary lavender, lavender aromatherapy roll-ons, lavender hand soap and dish soap, and more. Lavender taps into our ..read more

Vegan Smoky Maple Bacon Ice Cream

You may have clicked on this post thinking that the vegan ‘bacon’ part of the recipe is coconut bacon. It’s not – it’s far too hot here to even consider turning on the oven, so I created a vegan maple bacon using tempeh instead. If you think mixing tempeh and dairy-free ice cream is gross, you have a few options: Make the tempeh bacon on its own and sprinkle it on sandwiches, eggless omelettes, or roasted veggie bowls (I promise it’s delicious!) No Churn Double Chocolate Ice Cream

I’ve had my ice cream maker for over a decade; I paid about $50 for it and I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth. Normally, I’m not into the kitchen gizmos and gadgets (I like to keep it pretty simple) but when it comes to dairy-free ice cream, I’m really glad I have my ice cream maker. Still, it’s nice to have a few recipes that don’t need churning at all, or don’t need to use my alternative method that involves freezing in ice cube trays and blending. No churn ice cream means less work overall and the ice cream will make it to your mouth quicker. To make ice cream super creamy and deliciou ..read more

Cookie Dough Ice Cream (Dairy-Free, Vegan)

Today’s Ice Cream Friday flavour, vegan cookie dough ice cream, emerged from a reader request. See what happens when you ask for things? Ice cream magic! Really, ‘reader request’ isn’t entirely accurate. When I asked the world via Instagram which ice cream flavours I should create this summer, a childhood friend immediately piped up. She’s a bad-ass entrepreneur and one of the best parents, I think, of our generation. What I always remember about Darcie is that growing up, she was the type of person who made you feel listened to, loved and supported without judgment. So she des ..read more
