Your electricity bill is about to rocket and we're not talking about the energy companies putting their prices up (though they probably are).  The energy saving trust highlight issues with some people struggling to pay their fuel bills in their blog this week http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/blog/2012/10/23/energy-bills-when-silence-is-not-golden/ We've reached that time of year when you leave home in the mornings in haze and mist and general dingy light. The last few mornings for us here heading in to work has been very damp and dull. Going home is even worse. It's now very dul ..read more

Is there a difference between Class 2 & Double Insulated Lighting? On any given weekday we will take telephone calls from customers who have been advised by their electricians that they don’t have an earth connection in their homes lighting circuit. Some will ask for Class 2 lighting and some will ask for double insulated lights. The question is, is there a difference between the two different terms and do they relate to the same products? There is a very quick answer to this question and a bit of a longer description so for all those who want the short answer, drum roll please, double ..read more

Double Insulated spotlights Spotlights, or downlights if that is how you refer to them, are one area of lighting that seems to have existed for absolute years and over that time have adapted and moved along with the current technology. I’m talking about the recessed ones. Either your own house has some or you’ll know someone with some. They look great in kitchens, some are designed to be moisture proof for bathrooms and some will tilt to throw light where you want it. The 1980s conjure up memories of large spotlights with those big screw in reflector bulbs. The 90s make me think of halogen ..read more

Double insulated lighting & how not to panic when an electrician gives you that look! (A customers' experience) Things couldn’t have been better. Our new house, which we had bought off my parents when my siblings had eventually cleared out, was officially ours. No sooner had we moved all the boxes in that attentions turned to decorating. Well my wife’s did anyway. I was quite happy to take it easy for a few months. Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite handy with DIY but I was in no rush. Talk of pasting tables and carpets drowned out by football commentary got louder and louder until eventuall ..read more

Do double insulated light switches & sockets exist & do I need them?

Do double insulated light switches & sockets exist & do I need them? One double insulated lighting question that we are asked time and time again is where can I get double insulated sockets & switches from. Our customers will often come to us for class 2 lights that don’t require an earth and the choice of double insulated light is now very good, but it stands to reason that if they don’t have an earth connection in their lighting circuit then they probably wouldn’t have an earth in their ring main circuit. Logic says that if you need a specially designed light fitting to protect ..read more

How can a double insulated light be made of metal? A question that we come across from time to time is how can a class 2 double insulated light be made of metal? After all, a double insulated light is designed with safety in mind so why would metal be used in their construction as obviously metal conducts electricity! Without the safety of an earth connection, a metal product clearly can become highly dangerous. It is not only customers that ask us this but also some electricians as well. The answer is hidden in the nature of the construction of the product. A double insulated light is alw ..read more

What type of bulb should I put in my double insulated light? Currently there are several types of lightbulb technology that provide adequate light for not just double insulated lights but also traditional lights. Traditional bulbs which are incandescent were traditionally always put in to double insulated lights. These types of bulbs are very inefficient and slowly being phased out by government regulations. Though still available, there are issues that traditionally mean they are not perfect for double insulated lights, which we will discuss in a moment. Incandescent bulbs are very i ..read more

Can I convert my light to double insulated? Occasionally we are asked if a persons’ light fitting can be converted to double insulated. Usually an electrician has removed a beloved old light that has hung in a room for years to do some routine maintenance and discovered that the house has no earth connection & the beloved light can’t, according to current electrical regulations, go back up again. The electrician will advise the client to purchase a double insulated light from someone like Lightahome or to rewire the houses electrics, which can be costly & messy. A light is double in ..read more

Double Insulated Lights V Normal Lights. Looking inside & comparing

Normal Lights Vs Double Insulated Lights From the outside a double insulated light looks exactly the same as a normally earthed light. You cannot tell the difference in any way from just looking at a product. Once you delve inside the products however it becomes quite clear what the differences are. The first thing to realise is that every light fitting, be it normal or double insulated, should always have a silver sticker somewhere inside that tells you information such as maximum wattage to be used, if the product can be fitted on flammable surfaces and what the products class is.  A ..read more

Double Insulated LED Batten 5ft Striplight. 48W, 4000 Lumens IP65 - Product Review

Double insulated LED strip light review Lightahome have just launched their brand new double insulated ceiling batten light & we thought it would be good to review the product. Obviously being double insulated means the light doesn't need an earth connection which is great for homes with just a live and neutral in their lighting circuit.  The light itself measures 5ft which makes it great as a replacement for existing fluorescent battens in kitchens. Its described as a twin unit though its actually a little smaller (75mm depth by 87mm width) which works in some ways as it make ..read more
