Tony Awards 2022 Red Carpet Rundown

We’ve spent all day giving the spotlight treatment to various attendees of the 2022 Tonys (and you can find all that coverage by clickety-clicking here), but it’s time to round up the rest of the lot and give them the ol’ drive-by judgment. Put your judgin’ pants on, kittens!   Amber Ruffin The color looks great on her, but the top half of the design feels a little unresolved. We like the layered effect, though.       Bebe Neuwirth Can’t really argue with that.       Bernadette Peters Or that, It comes off a little stiff and heavy but it looks great on he ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Sarah Paulson in Moschino

We’re not even gonna pretend we’re ambivalent about this one.     We LOVES it. Putting aside for a moment the unusual shape, what appeals to us here is how this is a gown that gets more and more interesting the longer you look and the closer you get. When we first caught it onscreen last night, we though it was merely a gold metallic gown, then we realized it had a leopard print pattern, then we realized that pattern was multi-colored. Little pleasant surprises, one after another. As for that shape, it’s part of a long Paulson tradition of big or weird silhouettes, which is one ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Ruth Negga in Armani Privé: IN or OUT?

We tend to think Ruth Negga almost never gets her style wrong. Oh, sure. There have been one or two wobbles along the way, but for the most part, her red carpet style has always been dramatically impeccable, occasionally boundary-pushing, and always well-suited to her.   And we don’t necessarily think she’s breaking her winning streak with this look, but for the purposes of providing you all with something distracting and of no consequence (more or less the driving ethos of this site), we’re gonna nitpick a little and let you make the final call. The skirt is gorgeous and we love her ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: The Gentlemen

Let’s check out – and harshly judge – some of the men on the Tony Awards red carpet, darlings! The looks ranged from highly conventional to slightly unusual and the textile choices were all over the map.     Andrew Garfield in Tom Ford Absolutely love everything from the waist up. We’re sure those pants are just fine, but under the lighting conditions, the competing blacks bug a little.       Billy Porter in Dolce & Gabbana Could’ve done without the split hems and the fishing lures on the shoes, but that jacket really is spectacular and his hair is perfectly sty ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Jessica Chastain in Gucci

She’s a gal who loves herself some old-school va-va-voom, and since it suits Jessica Chastain so well, we can’t really claim we get bored by the consistency of her choices. This gown isn’t reinventing the wheel nor is it in some sort of original, fresh or head-turning color. As gowns go, it’s about as pure an example of Barbie fashion as you’re likely to see on a red carpet:     But that doesn’t mean we are without our quibbles. The skirt is gorgeous, but the bodice is a little over-worked. This is the second time we’re saying this today but we’d have liked this a lot more if ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Patti LuPone in Christian Siriano

Patti LuPone picked up her third Tony Award last night, for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Joanne in Company. She also neatly answered that age-old question, What becomes a legend most?     If that dress doesn’t practically scream “GRANDE DAME OF THE THEATER,” then no such dress exists. It’s dramatic and grandiose and it suits her perfectly. It’s incredibly well-fitted for so much velvet and we find ourselves wondering just how high the AC had to be cranked up so she didn’t collapse. We don’t mind jewelry worn over gloves (it’s got a nicely retro 19th ce ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Ariana DeBose in BOSS

Freshly minted Academy Award winner and bona fide Broadway baby Ariana DeBose took on the hosting duties for the Tony Awards and showed up for the night in her favorite style: sexy-glam with a cutout and a lot of leg.     We’re never going to love a dress with a belly cutout that large, placed that high on the bodice, but we’re glad to see that it wasn’t designed in such a way as to look like it was falling off her and exposing her bra, which is such a dress design cliche at this point. Instead, the bust feels fully integrated with the design, which is why it mostly works for ..read more

Tony Awards 2022: Jennifer Hudson in Pamella Roland

Jennifer Hudson walked the Tony Awards red carpet looking like a star, but she ended the evening looking like the latest EGOT recipient. The former American Idol contestant reached this prestigious career high as a producer for A Strange Loop, which won the Tony for Best New Musical. Congratulations, lady. You are now the most successful reality television star in history.   As for the dress, it’s a lovely design with the right combination of elegance and glamour that the Tonys red carpet tends to call for, but the bust sits a little low on her and the effect just makes us want to t ..read more

Friday Leftovers for the Week of June 5th, 2022

Shall we wrap this week of red carpetry up, darlings? Come judge with us, like a family.       Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani (in Nicole + Felicia) It’s like his top half and her bottom half belong at a dressy event, while his bottom half and her top half are going out for a bucket of wings. The skirt’s gorgeous and it’s nice to see her working an unexpected color story.       Colson Baker Love the hair and the footwear, but that suit isn’t just slim or short, it’s clearly too small on him. The clashing whites are distracting too.       Daisy Edg ..read more

JURASSIC PARK DOMINION Star Jeff Goldblum in Prada at LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS

It’s funny how we mentioned that Jeff Goldblum’s style, while impeccable, can be somewhat limited in range just at the exact moment when he evidently decided the same thing. The glitter and the skinny pants and ties and the leather jackets have all been put aside for what can only be described as a high-fashion take on Mr. Rogers.     It’s not really to our tastes, but it’s rare to find a senior straight man this willing to be exuberant and expressive with his fashion. While he does look very comfy, we can’t get over how drastically his silhouette suddenly changed. That’s way to ..read more
