Granny, Tell Me A Story

Granny Tell Me A Story. Or more likely, Daddy, Mummy tell me a story. The Story Quilt that Granny made is finished, however it is known. Finished, parcelled up, and winging its way across the Atlantic Ocean to my granddaughter. The quilt originally started as a Polaroid Quilt, designed by CapitalaQuilter. I loved this when I saw it and thought it would be a fun block for my bee mates to make. At that time I was in the Modern Quilt Ireland bee. Sadly the guild folded but I have many happy memories and made many friends through this. I can't track back to my original post, but it was pre ..read more

Don't Mind If I Moan

I have been a bit of a moaning Minnie these last couple of weeks. About three weeks ago, just as I last blogged, I started to baste this wee Tell Me A Story quilt, a  Polaroid quilt block quilt .   And that was  were my troubles started. I think I am allergic to the wadding. I have very sensitive eyes and skin, bless my little cotton socks, and as soon as I started to baste, the eyes started streaming. Now, cast your mind back,I wanted to avoid shopping in person in my local fabric shop (non quilting, just an Aladdin's cave shop), due to Covid and all that jazz, the shop is ve ..read more

Metaphorical Housekeeping

Keeping in the zone, with my mood for tidying things up and finishing things off, the non housework things anyway, I had another look at my polaraoid quilt.    This was started eons ago. I can't even remember how long ago. It was the last year I was in the Bee for Modern Irish Quilting Guild. I had seen some "photgraph" quilts and they really drew me in. At that time Capitolaquilter had a quiltalong of fabric polaroids and I had been following them on instagram. I had asked my fellow Bee members to make me a square that I could cut dow ..read more

https://slaneyquiltingstudio.com/tinahely-quilt-marquee-2020/The  lovely Tomomi of Slaney Quilting Studios organises a quilt show every year. This year, like every other quilt show, it is not going to happen. Not to be daunted, Tomomi organised a virtual show. And this year I happened to have not one, but two quilts I entered. Last year and the year before, I felt none of my quilts "were good enough". This year I decided to bite the bullet and  took the plunge to enter the Tinahely Quilt Marquee 2020.     So, go visit Tomomi's show. It is very go ..read more

The Grey Quilt in the Grey Abbey

I always think I have a finish when I finish the quilt top. Going by those rules, I have another finish. I have finished the top of the broken mill wheel block, using cotton and steel fat quarters and a variety of grey kona fabrics. I have also finished the backing. That's two finishes isn't it? I have the wadding now, but it will be a while before I get around to putting it all together. With our gentle out and about we seemed to be on a Normans in Ireland trail, so we took the quilt with us.   The Normans were what we i ..read more

Its All Coming Together
Midget Gem Quilts

Things are all coming together nicely here in our household bubble of 2 as lockdown begins to ease in the UK, and specifically for us in N Ireland. People in general are out and about, wisely or not I am not sure. The shops are opening again. The pubs that serve food are opening again, and bars with outdoor space are opening again. For most people life is beginning to return to the new normal. For us, life is slowly, tentatively changing too. I am still shielding but am "allowed, indeed encouraged to go for walks outside the home, once a day". This can be with the person I live with, or with o ..read more

Bits, Bobs and Sods

The sewing mojo is returning. Last week I made a few things. And this week I started not one new quilt, but two quilts. A pair of quilts to be precise. Like animals into the Ark, quilts in our house often come in twos. I will tell you about them next week. This week is all about the bits and bobs. Do you remember I made a gazillion 1hr baskets for the girls in my scrapbooking class? I made everyone a basket except one. My friend Mrs R was in the middle east visiting her son and family. I was basketed out and in any case had run out of wadding. I thought I would make hers on her return. Her re ..read more

Hello My Old Friend

Hello my old friend, this period in quarantine is the perfect opportunity to finish off all these straggling wip. My Liberty EPP (English paper piecing) has been my friend for a very long time. Now, it isn't necessarily what you think. I could say this has been on the go for many years because it is all hand pieced, but in reality, it has been dipped in and out of. Today I had another look at it. I have been sewing all the flowers together for the last while, off and on. Over the weekend I have really been going at it. So today I laid it out on the grass, fully expecting to be at the a fli ..read more

Kaffe Fassett is in the House

Have there been two moons in the sky? Nope. There was the most beautiful full moon at the beginning of this month, The Pink Moon I believe it was called by the indigenous American peoples. There was a definite pink glow around this one, it was a very pretty moon. I have a wee thing I do with the moon, I will tell you at the end. There weren't two moons in the sky, but I have two finishes very close together. I present to you, the finished Kaffe Fassett snowball quilt, formerly known in time of stress as the Kaffe Fokkett quilt. I have to find a new name now I suppose. This quilt was st ..read more

Can I Have "A Big Hug"?
Midget Gem Quilts

Can I have "A Big Hug"? The answer is No. Just a virtual hug, but I will leave that question just hanging there. I have decided the perfect name for version of The Grace Heart Quilt, designed by mmmquilt.com is THE Big Hug. The hearts seem to be very relevant at the minute. The big read heart at the front just seemed to leap out at me. I thought of The Big Love, but that reminds me of a tv series that was on (not that I watched it). The Big Hug just seemed to wrap itself around me, just the way a hug should. The warmth and love that comes from a hug, says it all. Love, affection, carin ..read more
