How to Get Chores Done when You’d Rather do Anything Else

Some of us (me included) would do almost anything to avoid chores. Back in 2010, I had a full time job and was writing my dissertation in Economics.  I didn’t have kids or pets. I would write 1000 complicated equations or 500 lines of code before doing a chore around the house. Now I have kids and a big job and fitness goals and of course I would still rather do those things than chores.  It appears some people are like that. Based on my very informal research, 20% of people fall into the category of “Ignore boring chores at all costs.” I was really surprised by this data because I’v ..read more

Weekly routines are so important. They keep life running smoothly. Morning routines get all the press but, to be honest, give me a good weekly routine any day. This is what makes the difference between ordering out every night and eating a home-cooked meal. It’s the difference between piles of laundry and having clean underwear. A good weekly routine really can take you from feeling frazzled and overwhelmed to knowing it’s all under control.  Why is it important to have a weekly routine? Weekly routines are so important, especially to busy people. These routines are important for a few re ..read more

Three Key Decisions that Can Reduce Decision Fatigue

Picture your typical morning. If you’re a parent of small kids, you likely make 100 decisions before you even arrive at work. What is the weather like today? What should the baby wear? What should I wear? Does my toddler need a coat today? What will I have for breakfast? Which coat do I need? Should I have black coffee or a latte? The list goes on. Decision fatigue means that you might arrive at your desk completely exhausted. This doesn’t feel great and it means that your decisions at work might not be as good as they might otherwise be. And by the end of the day you might find yourself compl ..read more

It’s happened to the best of us. You have great intentions for the week. You’ve set your weekly goals. You’ve laid out your plans. The schedule is busy but you should be able to get everything done. Then it comes at you, probably on Wednesday around lunchtime. That work task that you didn’t learn about until the middle of the week and absolutely MUST be done by Friday. Sometimes these things happen and there’s just no getting around it. This happened to me just last week. I was already pretty busy when I saw the email.  I’ll admit, I was annoyed at first. I had a list of things to get don ..read more

Planning as a Four Tendencies Questioner

I don’t get super amped up about New Year’s Resolutions. (I prefer when-it-makes-sense resolutions. There’s nothing special about Jan 1.) I hate a planner that tries to do too much. (I prefer something with a bit of structure but also flexibility.) I’ll spend time on planning, but only if it helps me. (I have no interest in decorating my planner or planning for its own sake.) Does this sound familiar? If so, you might be a Questioner. What is a Questioner? The Questioner personality type comes from Gretchen Rubin’s book The Four Tendencies. The framework Rubin writes about categorizes people b ..read more

The upside to planning is that it helps you get things done. I love that my planner helps me maintain momentum, even when I’m busy or stressed. This month, I’ve noticed a downside though. Sometimes I stay in “Getting Things Done” mode when I really need to be in parenting or connection mode.  A few weeks ago, my daughter got in trouble at one of her activities. But I was so focused on the errands I needed to run on the way home from said activity that I missed a golden opportunity to talk with her about what happened on the way home. When I got home, I realized that I had dropped the ball ..read more

Daily Cleaning Habits for Busy Families

I’m not going to lie: last week we got SO overwhelmed with our house chores. The piles of laundry…the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. It was rough. The funny thing is, I started out the week doing GREAT. On Monday I think I did five or six loads of laundry. I cleaned the house. I washed the dishes. I ordered a full week’s worth of groceries. By Tuesday, I was exhausted. Apparently I have a limited supply of household chore energy, and I used it all up on Monday. By Friday, the place was a disaster.  That’s why I’m trying tiny steps this week. Here are the very low bars I’m going to set ..read more
