In 2006 a new competition was started, called the "World Marathon Majors (WMM) series", sponsored, since 2015, by the health care company Abbott. It was originally a points system for elites, but since 2006 a certificate was introduced for non-elites who completed the six city marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City). Then, in 2016, a new six-star finisher medal was introduced in addition to the certificate, fuelling the desire of many to complete all six "marathon stars". 4 weeks to go. Those of you running London (or Boston), I feel your anxiety! Training is done, for the most part, and now we’re in that ‘critical zone’. That point where you have a few meaningful workouts left, but where you can’t jeopardize the work you’ve already done by over-doing it. It truly is a fine balance! Road to London – Back to Reality!

After returning to Indianapolis, things have gone very well. The bump back to reality, however, has been a challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and living in Indianapolis, but I’m no longer waking up to the Flatiron mountains or the soft surface trails of the Res. Instead, it’s back to the early morning alarm clocks and running the neighborhoods with street lighting! Nonetheless, the altitude impact has been evident on my recent training – things just seem easier, I feel so strong and workouts have been the best of my fledgling marathon career. What is iron? Iron is a mineral found in the body and forms a key part of haemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells that is responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. How much do we need? Iron requirements vary depending on age, menstrual status and most likely training volume and environment too. The current UK guidelines state Reference Nutrient Intakes (RNI) of 8.7mg/day and 14.8mg/day for males and females respectively. Female recommendations fall to 8.7mg/day following menopause.
