In November, I read 11 books, bringing my count up to 109! I don’t think I will quite hit 120 by the end of December, but obviously I’ve done very well this year. Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith A retelling of Ovid’s Iphis and Ianthe, this novel takes place in Inverness, Scotland and focuses on the tense relationship between sisters Anthea (a scattered, unhappy idealist) and Imogen (an ambitious people-pleaser). Imogen has helped Anthea get a job at a local PR firm, but Anthea embarrasses Imogen at work by being uninterested and absent. When a local vandal with a message targets their office, An ..read more

I didn’t quite make it to 100 books by the end of the month, but I read 8 for a total of 98, so I’m just a few days away from reaching that elusive number. Here’s what I read in October. Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo My only five-star read this month, and a worthy winner of the Booker! (We will not talk about the tie shenanigans, because it is too frustrating.) Evaristo explores the lives of twelve British womxn – most of whom are Black or biracial – with each narrative loosely pivoting around a play written by the lesbian socialist Amma. This novel is simply delightful: clever ..read more

Another month has come and gone, with nine books read for a total of 90 in 2019. Yay! This month, amongst others, I read four Booker nominees. (I could have finished all six, but I’m waiting on two that aren’t yet out in Canada to arrive from the UK. They’re supposed to get here this week, which will keep me on track to finish the shortlist by the winner announcement on October 14.) Here’s what I read in September. Safekeeping by Jessamyn Hope The peak of this book is its cover. After committing a horrible crime, twenty-six-year-old drug addict Adam leaves New York City for an Israeli kibbu ..read more

I didn’t read quite as much this month as I’d hoped to, mostly because I went on the type of vacation where I spent all my free time with family I hadn’t seen in a while. But I still managed 9 books for a total of 81, which is nothing to scoff at. In September and October I’m going to be focusing on the Booker shortlist (which comes out on Tuesday!) to hopefully read them all before the winner is announced. Things are changing a lot for me in September – I’ve left my job after a year in order to start my PhD! Between my own work and my TA responsibilities, I imagine my free time will be rathe ..read more

July was a very productive month, with 12 books read. That makes for 72 in 2019 so far! In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume In the early 1950s in Elizabeth, New Jersey, fifteen-year-old Miri Ammerman has some pretty typical teenage concerns: trying to maintain her relationship with her single mother, drifting away from her best friend, and falling for a guy who goes to another school. But then Miri witnesses a plane dropping out of the sky. A few weeks later, another plane crashes in Elizabeth, narrowly missing the high school Miri will be attending in the fall. And then a third plane, this ..read more

Empties: April to June 2019

I have accumulated a lot of empties over the past three months, especially in the realm of skincare. (Not surprising, since I’m way more into skincare than makeup these days, my routine is far more complex than it ever has been, and I work in the industry.) So let’s get right into it without wasting any words! Bath and Body A-Derma Exomega Emollient Balm: A great soothing, hydrating body cream, but I just can’t keep up this habit when I go through a $30+ bottle in two months! The Body Shop Body Butter – Coconut: The last of my winter stockpile. I’m sure I’ll buy another three next fall. The C ..read more

Well, halfway through the year already and I’m doing very well with my reading! I read 10 books in June, for a total of 60 in 2019. I’m still somewhat loftily aiming for 100 in 2019 – the next two months will really determine if that’s possible or not. Here’s what I’ve made space in my brain for lately… Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut In the spring of 2012, I read Slaughterhouse-Five as an independent study novel for my grade 12 English final essay. Timequake, Vonnegut’s last “novel”, was the final one I had to read after seven years. (I like the neat math of having read fourteen novels in seven y ..read more

May was a good month for me – I read 11 books for an even 50, meaning I hit my yearly goal seven months early. I’m making good progress towards my stretch goal of 100 – I know my reading will slow in the last third of the year, so I’m trying to make the next few months count! Regardless, 2019 will shape up to be my biggest reading year since I made it to 100 back in 2012, so I’m already feeling pretty satisfied. Here’s what I read this month… The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman A childhood favourite that is even better when revisited in adulthood – hard to believe! So many images from this b ..read more

Review: Dollar Shave Club Executive Razor

I take a laissez-faire approach to shaving my legs. I don’t feel all that much social pressure to remove my relatively sparse hair, which I acknowledge is largely a privilege born of whiteness. Particularly during the winter, I can happily go weeks without shaving. However, due to my keratosis pilaris I do enjoy the feeling of smoothness, or as close to smoothness as I can get. There is nothing more satisfying when you have KP than taking the time to shave, exfoliate, and moisturize and just sitting there rubbing your legs together. This must be how normal people feel all the time!!! However ..read more

I was convinced that my reading had slowed significantly in April, but I ended up reading 10 books for a total of 39 this year. If I could read 11 in May for an even 50 by the end of the month, I’d be really happy. Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler In a world ravaged by environmental disaster, Lauren Olamina lives in relative affluence with her family within a walled community. But when she loses her family, she is forced to leave home. Lauren, whose father is a preacher, has long since rejected the religion she was raised in, in favour of one of her own making. As she journeys north ..read more
