What is the Role of a Technical Lead on a SAFe Agile Team

If you look at the Agile Team guidance in SAFe, you won't find a Technical Lead listed as one of the speciality roles (i.e. Scrum Master and Product Owner). That said, a Tech Lead or Lead Engineer is a construct we have found to be a valuable addition to a technical agile team (e.g. software, firmware or hardware-centric team). We see this as the logical extension of the SAFe System Architect, in the same way that Product Owners are the team-level representation of Product Management. The benefits of including this role are two-fold: it provides a career path for developers and ensures technic ..read more

Will the Real SAFe Product Manager Please Stand Up

Having recently posted on The ART of Selecting SAFe Product Owners, I am now finding myself getting questions about the role of the SAFe Product Manager.  What is the role of the Product Manager in SAFe? While all Product Managers focus on a similar set of functions, such as understanding customer needs and prioritizing Features, we find that the SAFe Product Manager role varies depending on the product(s), solution(s) or services(s) being delivered by the Agile Release Train (ART). For ARTs delivering market-facing solutions, the Product Manager role will have a significant focus on mark ..read more

We find that the SAFe Product Manager role varies depending on the product(s), solution(s) or services(s) being delivered by the Agile Release Train (ART). For an ART delivering to internal customers, the Product Manager ..read more

SAFe in Government - Where are we now?
Pretty Agile | Adventures in Scaling Agile Blog
by SAFe Australia Online Meetup

For over a decade, government agencies have gradually become more open to adopting the Lean-Agile and DevSecOps ways of working described in SAFe. Today, Agile is the preferred technical approach for many public sector and defence software development programs. In fact, we are seeing a rise in SAFe being specified in government Request for Proposals (RFPs). While all of this is good news, challenges remain that prevent government agencies from achieving true mission agility! In this session, Dr. Steve Mayner, VP Framework, Methodologist & SAFe Fellow at Scaled Agile, Inc., provides an upda ..read more

Demystifying Team Topologies in SAFe
Pretty Agile | Adventures in Scaling Agile Blog

Team Topologies has been part of SAFe since version 5.1. Many SAFe classes, including the very popular Leading SAFe, have two slides summarising Team Topologies in the context of SAFe. Personally, I’ve always found a two-slide summary of a 240-page book to be somewhat ambitious - especially in the classroom. I figure I’m not the only one with this observation, so I thought I would attempt my own distillation of the key messages regarding Team Topologies in SAFe.  For me, an appreciation of Team Topologies starts with an understanding of feature and component teams. In their book Scaling L ..read more

The ART of Selecting SAFe Product Owners

A few weeks ago, I was teaching an executive Leading SAFe class, and our Business Owners were clearly very new to Agile, SAFe and Scrum. As I started the lesson on Team and Technical Agility, I noticed them leaning in to try and better understand the role of the SAFe Product Owner.  We had begun ART design prior to the class, and the subject of identifying Product Owners had already been tabled. After I rattled off my view and answered the many questions that followed, my co-teach said to me, “That would make an excellent blog”. Today, I am testing that theory. ? The Product Owner is the ..read more

Coaching Flow: Implementing an effective flow system
Pretty Agile | Adventures in Scaling Agile Blog
by SAFe Australia Online Meetup

Delivering a continuous flow of value to the customer is one of the defining characteristics of an effective SAFe enterprise. But flow is not easy to achieve, and many impediments occur along the way. Success requires a knowledge of what flow is and how to achieve it. In turn, this requires people who are knowledgeable in flow and can coach individuals, teams, and trains—and even LPM—to achieve a higher flow of value. This responsibility can be fulfilled by any number of different SAFe roles, including SPCs, Scrum Masters, RTEs, STEs, and any savvy leaders that seek to optimize the flow of val ..read more

Five Use Cases for an Agile Release Tram (aka Small Scale SAFe)
Pretty Agile | Adventures in Scaling Agile Blog
by Em Campbell-Pretty

What is an Agile Release Tram? Well, that is a great question. It sounds a bit like Agile Release Train; however, there are no references to it in the Scaled Agile Framework. While I’m sure we are not the only people who have Agile Release Trams, this is a pattern we have been using since 2015 or 2016. In simple terms, it is an Agile Release Train (as per SAFe) that is smaller than the recommended minimum size of five teams and 50 people. We call them baby ARTs or trams. (We are from Melbourne, Australia, home to the world’s largest operational tram network. In other jurisdictions, trams are r ..read more
