Charlotte-based designer Lisa Sherry creates custom interiors throughout the city, but clients often hire her to work on their beach and mountain homes, too. When the owners of a dated home on Bald Head Island wanted to dial up the interior, they knew Sherry, who had owned a home there for almost 20 years, would get their vision. At the top of her clients’ wish list was a light, airy primary bedroom with a modern, spa-like bathroom. “It was dark and dingy with old carpet and no soul,” Sherry says. “The views are outstanding, so we really wanted to open it up and bring new life into this 1970s ..read more

Now Open in Charlotte: Taco Boy Comes Inland

Open a taqueria on the ground floor of a mixed-use development in front of a light rail stop in LoSo, and you’re guaranteed to attract customers. Stay open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays with a DJ spinning house tracks, and those customers aren’t likely to care if your taco game is less than awesome. Mexican culinary tradition isn’t the goal at Taco Boy, despite servers’ T-shirts that read, “Tacos are our superpower.” The vibe is the priority here. Taco Boy’s flagship location opened in Folly Beach, South Carolina, in 2006. Founder Karalee Nielsen Fallert has been a longtime advocate ..read more

Two months into lockdown, Ashlyn Greer quit her video production job. “I knew it was crazy,” she says. “I basically jumped off a cliff.” She gave herself five months to come up with a business idea—something, she hoped, that would utilize her fashion background, which includes a master’s degree from Savannah College of Art and Design and positions at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Belk. By September, she still didn’t have a plan, and her hiatus was almost up. Then she got a text from a friend: COVID was wearing on her, and she didn’t feel human anymore. Fashion trends had continued to ..read more

Day Trips From Charlotte: Salisbury
Charlotte Magazine » Travel

Charlotteans can sometimes dismiss Salisbury as sleepy and old-fashioned. I did until about two years ago, when I needed to renew my driver’s license. Absurd wait times at Mecklenburg County DMVs drove me the 40 miles to Salisbury, just less than halfway to Greensboro. Their DMV’s efficiency would’ve been enough to convert me, but as I grabbed some lunch downtown, I realized: Hold the phone, Salisbury is actually cool. I’m not the first person to figure that out. The city’s grown: Since 2000, the population has increased by 18% to more than 36,000 people. Salisbury’s director of communication ..read more

Charlotte Teens: We Want to Hear From You

In high school? We’d like a couple of things from you. First, an answer to this: “What do you wish adults understood about your life?” Second, a few photos or screenshots that reflect your typical day—nothing inappropriate, and preferably nothing posed. Just natural, in-the-moment stuff to give people an idea of what you do and who you do it with. If you want to just submit one and not the other, that’s OK. Oh, and in case you’re worried: You don’t need to identify yourself. Charlotte Teens What did you wish adults knew? What do you wish adults knew about your life? Age or Grade(Required) S ..read more

In what may have been the deadliest day for law enforcement in the city’s history, three members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot and killed this afternoon in east Charlotte. Another task force member and four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were injured, one critically. “I’ve been with this department for 32 years, and I can’t remember an incident where three law enforcement officers were killed,” CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters during a news conference near the scene this afternoon. “To me, it’s the most tragic one I’ve ever been involved in.” A Charlotte ..read more

An Education in Period Poverty

When Elesia Glover thinks of period poverty, her mind goes to one particular family. It’s a single-parent household with three daughters. The girls’ menstrual cycles synched, but their parent could afford period products for only one of them. Each day of their periods, the girls took turns: One went to school, two stayed home. “I can only imagine what that must feel like for a parent,” says Glover, a Charlotte period poverty advocate. “Think of the academic aspect, too. What does that mean for students who miss full days in class because they don’t have access to a very basic hygiene need?” T ..read more

Why Out-of-Town Breweries Flock to Charlotte
Charlotte Magazine » Travel

One by one, breweries from other cities are crashing the raucous party of Charlotte’s beer scene: Hippin’ Hops and Monday Night from Atlanta; Burial and Hi-Wire from Asheville; Frothy Beard out of Charleston. As of January, by our count, out-of-town breweries owned and operated nine taprooms in the Charlotte area. It’s no mystery. Charlotte’s a booming city packed with young professionals who like to quaff craft beer. But what about the reverse—Charlotte-area breweries opening in other cities and towns? To this point, even those with multiple taprooms here are content to stay close to home. T ..read more
