The Busby Foundation (busbyals.org) is an established ALS organization helping those in Central Texas for 15+ years. In an effort to help more families with ALS, we are looking to expand to other markets to support ALS families in those areas. Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity? Do you have a strong network and a desire to help this community? We are seeking candidates to run a satellite location in your local region if you do. Please contact me via DM and I can provide more information. Thanks! submitted by /u/red-spartan [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Tips for a new hospice volunteer?

Hello all! I am going to apply to be a hospice volunteer pretty soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice or resources for me to learn more about how to actually do it? What I mean is, I know that being a volunteer doesn't entail the more physical care like bathing and feeding, it's more companionship and supporting the families, but I'd like to learn some ways of providing that type of support and to make sure I don't say or do something wrong. I have a pretty good idea of how to treat people when they are grieving but sometimes, I don't know what to say or how to help someone proce ..read more

How a very large volunteer sending organization is changing from charity to local empowerment

I attended a webinar today by an international charity that has had an international volunteering program for many years, where people - mostly people from the USA - go to other countries for just one week to volunteer. The organization suspended this international volunteering program during the COVID pandemic, then decided to keep it suspended and to substantially redesign it. I wanted to note some of the changes to this program as an example of why there are fewer and fewer volunteering abroad opportunities for people from "rich" countries to go "help" somewhere for a few days or weeks as ..read more

What is meant by "safety policies" for volunteering programs?
Reddit - Volunteer
by /u/jcravens42

Any organization that involves volunteers needs to have safety policies and procedures to protect both volunteers and those that they serve, and if the volunteers interact with vulnerable people or could be in one-to-one situations with ANYONE, there needs to be more extensive policies. If your nonprofit or NGO involves children in ANY way, even "just online", you MUST have safety policies on your web site and you must link to those policies when you post about your effort here. If you don't, your post will be deleted. What do safety policies look like? Screening steps for volunteers could be ..read more

From the American Red Cross Facebook page, a profile of a volunteer: When she was just 12 years old, Tania Rodriguez saved her mother's life only months after learning first aid with the Red Cross. This led to a lifelong commitment and passion for serving others through our mission. While living in Chihuahua, Mexico, where she was proudly born and raised, Tania saw fliers for first aid classes around her neighborhood. She started taking classes every Saturday and quickly became a leader in the Red Cross youth program. “I went from taking classes to teaching classes for kids my age," Tania ..read more

To get to be like this volunteer from Louisiana, who goes into disaster zones, you need training and experience locally. Whenever a disaster strikes, thousands of people start contacting various organizations and posting to online groups in an effort to try to volunteer onsite at the disaster site. Some even jump in their cars and drive to an affected area they have heard about in the news, or start gathering what they think affected people might need. Some even FLY to the area, even in another country, and announce, "Hey, here I am, ready to help!" But what most of these people don't realize ..read more

From the American Red Cross Facebook page - a profile of a volunteer from Louisiana. What started as looking up to her parents as first aid instructors turned into a 40-year Red Cross volunteer journey for Deb Gibson. Deb's parents introduced her to the Red Cross mission while teaching Standard and Advanced First Aid Lifesaving courses. Deb remembers helping her mom roll bandages for class when pre-rolled gauze wasn’t widely available yet. She even helped her parents prepare care packages for service members during the Vietnam War after her dad retired from the military. It was no surpris ..read more
