2023 has come to an end and we look back at what we did last year. After the pandemic we were ready to start travelling again. Initially the plan was to go to Madeira, a place that has been on the bucket list for a while. But when airplane tickets reached nearly $1100 per person, we decided that it wasn’t worth it. Other priorities also caused this to be the least active travel year we’ve had, excluding the pandemic. But we have tried to bring the travel experiences to us, rather than travelling far away. More about that further down, but first, a bit about the trips we have been able to under ..read more

Finding a Mine Unexplored Since WWII

About a year ago we travelled to a remote valley in Norway, where we found two mines at the bottom of a steep mountain side. After doing some research we discovered that there is a path going all the way up to the top of the mountain, an impressive 715 meters above. And on top there were allegedly more mines, one of which was supposed to be hanging straight off the mountain side, only accessible by an 80 meter ladder. Here is the video from our trip finding the mine: Whether you like mines or not, the hike over the mountain is a great trip. The view from the top is really breath taking (and n ..read more

Railway Biking Along the Flekkefjord Line
Bilivoka » Norway

As a child you were probably told not to ride your bike on the railway tracks. Ooops, here’s 34 km of just that... Flekkefjordbanen (or The Flekkefjord Line in English) is a decommissioned railway line that has been turned into a draisine track, or rail bike as it’s also called. We have tried draisines before, but none with as beautiful views or as long tunnels as this one. Check out the video below where we ride the full track back and forth, 34 km in total, and a total of 16 km in pitch darkness in the tunnels. Practical The Flekkefjord Line starts as one might expect in Flekkefjord, Norway ..read more

Hiking Norway’s Longest Log Flume in Vennesla
Bilivoka » Norway
by Jørn - Bilivoka

A log flume stretching over 4 kilometres is well maintained and can be visited in Southern Norway. We obviously needed to check this out and brought along our hammocks and some chocolate to investigate Since the log flume was rather long and also featured a decommissioned hydroelectric power plant along the way we decided to bring the hammocks and spend a night here. The trip can be seen in the video below: We travelled to Vennesla near Kristiansand in the afternoon and started hiking before sunset. The log flume was (and still is) under maintenance, so out of the four kilometres three of the ..read more

Entering a 7000 Year Old Glacier – Klimapark 2469

If someone told us that in the middle of a summer holiday we were going to go from shorts and t-shirts to down jackets and wool socks in less than half an hour we would probably just laugh at them. But that’s what happened when we drove from Lom to the ice tunnel of Jotunheimen. Klimapark 2469 is… well, what to call this place? It is a climate park, a 7000 year old glacier in the Jotunheimen national park in Norway. Part tourist attraction, part research and historical excavation site. The tunnel covers an astounding 375 square meters, filled with lights illuminating both the natural elements ..read more

2020 is coming to an end and we look back at what we have done this year. That 2020 has been a special year may be a bit of an obvious statement. But the first year we are not abroad in 20 years is something that can’t pass by without a mention. Due to a change of jobs during the first two months of the year there was no travel, and the rest is history as they say. But even though we didn’t go abroad we still did some travelling in Norway. Here is a 2 minute summary of our travel year: Skomakarnibbå The first small trip didn’t actually happen until May. Not far from home, but a spectacular p ..read more

Flørli: The Longest Wooden Stairs In The World

10 hours in the mountains, stormy weather, 32 km to hike, 4444 steps up a staircase and more than 1200 meters of elevation. The day trip up the world’s longest wooden stairs became a rather unusual hike. For several years we have wanted to travel to Flørli, a tiny place in Norway where the only connection to the rest of the world is a small ferry. There is a cabin here, a small museum and spectacular nature. But ask the locals what this place is known for and they’ll all give the same answer: Flørlitrappene, or the Flørli stairs as it’s known in English. Known as the world’s longest wooden st ..read more

Hiking to the highest point in Norway – Galdhøpiggen
Bilivoka » Norway
by Jørn - Bilivoka

This summer we decided to summit the highest mountain in Norway, namely Galdhøpiggen. The weather, however, was not going to be on our side. There are two main trails leading to Galdhøpiggen: From Juvasshytta starting at 1841 m.a.s.l. passing over a glacier From Spiterstulen starting at 1100 m.a.s.l. without glacier There are two immediate differences between these two routes. Starting from Juvasshytta you have to cross a glacier and therefore need a guide (well, you should have a guide!), while starting from Spiterstulen you need to gain a lot more elevation to reach the summit. Spiterstule ..read more

Fjord Cruise to the Pulpit Rock

After having hiked to the Pulpit Rock many times it was about time to have a look at it from a different perspective, trying out a fjord cruise to Lysefjorden. Previously we have decided not to see the famous rock formation by boat. After all, once you have stood on the plateau itself several times, why see it all the way from the bottom? Well, as it turns out, because the view is completely different – in a good way. In May it was still a bit cold, but with a hat the trip was enjoyable. The departure point was in downtown Stavanger, a very practical place to get to. As this happened during th ..read more

Skomakernibbå – Western Norway’s Hidden Mountain Gem

These days the newspapers write almost daily about overcrowded outdoor destinations in a time where social distancing is more important than ever. Staying safe and getting some fresh air and exercise, one place should be on your radar: Skomakernibbå. The list of spectacular natural wonders in Western Norway keeps growing. The Pulpit Rock, Trolltunga and Kjerag are the three famous ones, always filled with tourists. Then we came across Himakånå, a kind of miniature Trolltunga. And then there was Kolbolten, a miniature version of Kjeragbolten (that we apparently haven’t written about, more to fo ..read more
