Learning to improvise

Hey everyone! I thought I might post this up on here since I've been rather curious on how to improve in it. Basically, I've been dancing Ballroom for around 2 years now and over that time I've grown quite used to routines to help me understand moves. What I find now however is that I feel I've become too accustomed to dancing a fixed routine that I struggle to improvise when I dance with someone and it's 'out of routine'. I don't really dance competively (definitely more of a social dancer) although I would like to enter that space someday. First, I wanna just be a good social dancer overall ..read more

I’m 19, and I really want to learn how to dance. I want to learn how to move beautifully and have fun. However, my body coordination isn’t the best and I can’t learn choreography at a fast pace. I have had a few dance classes (contemporary and hip hop) at my high school before, but i felt completely lost in those classes. Everything was gone through too fast and no explanation/ detailed steps were given to me. I left dance classes feeling confused, embarrassed and overwhelmed. I want to give dance another try though. How are ballroom classes in the beginning? Do they break down each step? Bal ..read more

I'm planning to move in the next few years, and having a city with a thriving dance culture is a must. However! Whenever I try to research it all that tends to pop up is voguing, which isnt exactly what im looking for. Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Country- anybody have any reccomendations for cities where this is easily accessible? submitted by /u/xo_pallas [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Follower Latin heels: T-strap vs X-strap around arch vs X-strap around ankle

More or less what it says in the title: if you've tried multiple different strap styles for Latin heels, which did you prefer and why? If any coaches or shoe sellers can weigh in, are there particular feet shapes or dancer issues/tendencies that seem to do better with one style over the other? submitted by /u/aggressive-teaspoon [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m looking to buy a custom smooth/standard dress and I like some of the designs by QueenDanceDress (looks like it’s also associated with LatinoDanceSport): https://queendancedress.com/. Has anyone ordered from them before? Are they legit? Any tips for not getting scammed for ballroom dresses generally? submitted by /u/Aggravating_Staff905 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I never been to either studios. I recently met someone who goes to one of these chain studios and told me that she only does Arthur Murray or Fred Astaire comps. Is this true? Are their comps open to the outsiders or only exclusive to their own students? submitted by /u/tootsieroll19 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Blurred lines with my instructor

Hello all, I (30f) have been dancing with my instructor (70m) for the past 9 months. We dance multiple times a week but lately things have been feeling increasingly inappropriate. So I need a little insight from the community. About 6 months into my lessons another instructor happened to be at the studio and my instructor immediately asked for feedback on our dancing. (We were foxtrotting) straight away the guest instructor pulled my chest and head back away from my instructors and connected us “belly button to belly button.” A few weeks later in a different lesson my instructor made a commen ..read more
