Hi! What inspired the shift from Onera to Vigil, and how does …And The Void Stared Back album represent this evolution? Onera had run its course. There were some internal issues that made it not viable. At our age we don’t have the patients for conflicts. Justin and I (Craig), wanted to keep something going since we work well together. Onera does however have an unreleased full-length album that we have just never got around to getting out there. It has a guest vocal spot from Anneke van Giersbergen (the Gathering, Devin Townsend, VUUR) on an 18-minute epic song. Maybe someday soon. Can you s ..read more

Review: Ivory Tower “Heavy Rain” [Massacre Records]

I want to start with a little confession: I don’t like progressive metal in its pure form. I mean, I can appreciate playing techniques and sophisticated melodic lines but I personally define this genre as “music for musicians” therefore bands like Voivod or notorious Dream Theater are not in my everyday playlist. However, it’s a different matter when progressive mixed with some other genre like Nevermore, Evergrey and lots of other bands did. Now I can add another name to this list: power/progressive band Ivory Tower with their upcoming album Heavy Rain. I’ve never heard of this band, so let ..read more

Review: Rage “Afterlifelines” [Steamhammer/SPV]

This year Rage celebrates the band’s 40 years anniversary. 40 years! Such numbers still impress me, while Judas Priest celebrated 50 years. Also considering an amount of Rage albums, we can only wonder where they get their ideas, the strength and the inspiration for their new records. And one more number: this year the founder, singer and bassist Peter “Peavy” Wagner turns 60! Wow. To celebrate the anniversary, Rage, shrank to trio again (Stefan Weber left the band in 2023) and release their new, 27-th album named Afterlifelines. A double album, I want to emphasize. “The first CD is entitled ..read more

Review: Sturmtiger “Transcendent Warfare” [Demented Omen of Masochism]

The last summer, the Danish death/black metal band Sturmtiger (now based in the United Kingdom) released their second studio album Transcendent Warfare after an almost decade-long hiatus, joining forces with the independent label Demented Omen of Masochism. Although it wasn’t complete silence from them, as they released several splits and demos during these nine years, fans were eagerly anticipating new material with good sound quality, meticulous artwork, and a sense of conceptual integrity. Sturmtiger, named after the German assault gun from the World War II era, by all definitions plays tha ..read more

Review: Devilpriest “In Repugnant Adoration” [Odium Records]

At the end of 2022, the Polish death/black metal band Devilpriest released their sophomore studio album In Repugnant Adoration in collaboration with the local label Odium Records (now based in London). There was a significant pause from them; for a whole five years nothing was heard from the Devilpriest camp. The band decided to continue their flirtations with Satanism, cloaking it in a ritualistic conceptual canvas akin to a meditative state. So be cautious, if you adhere closely to Devilpriest’s instructions, don’t forget to check for demons before going to sleep. Devilpriest is a four-piece ..read more

DUSK, the Costa Rican Industrial Black Metal band, has announced that their fifth full-length album titled ‘INDUSTRIE’ will be released internationally on May 30th, 2024. This new album brings a new concept never explored by the band, this forthcoming release is more experimental and way more digestive than the previous releases, incorporating some groove-paced riffs into the grisly aggression and the apocalyptic landscapes. Album tracklisting and cover art are as follows: 1. INDUSTRIE I 2. INDUSTRIE II 3. INDUSTRIE III 4. INDUSTRIE IV 5. INDUSTRIE V 6. INDUSTRIE VI 7. FREEZING MOON VII Today ..read more
