Video Workshop: Quickstep Four and Six Quick Run
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik
3w ago
The Four and Six Quick Runs in Quickstep often confuse social dancers because they are almost the same figure, but start with a different foot. In this half-hour workshop, we review the two figures with insight into what makes them different, and how to enter each one. The Four Quick Run is a Silver figure, while the Six Quick Run is a Gold figure. This video is available to all Delta Dance members. You can learn about memberships here. Apple Watch broken again for thousands of dance teachers
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik

I’ve been an Apple fan since several years before the first Macintosh made its appearance a day after my birthday back in 1984. I’ve owned almost every piece of hardware Apple ever made, including the Newton tablet. So naturally, when the Apple Watch came on the market I had to have one. It turned out to be a powerful tool for me as a dance teacher. Sadly, with the new 10.x WatchOS system update, inexplicable changes have made using it a frustrating experience. Like thousands of dance teachers, Zumba teachers and others around the world, I have my iPhone connected to a professional audio s ..read more

Tribute to Amar Dhillon
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik

I first met Amar Dhillon in 2017. She came to me after finalizing a divorce from a verbally abusive relationship. Her confidence in herself was shattered because of what she had gone through, but she had always wanted to know how to dance. Ballroom dancing was a difficult thing for her to take on. Not only because of the confidence issue, in which constantly being told for years that she couldn’t do anything right made her doubt everything she did. It was also hard for cultural reasons. She told me that in the culture she had grown up in, the concept of dancing in close contact with someone yo ..read more

The positive energy of dance in the midst of turmoil
Delta Dance

I’ve been watching the new Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air,” a spectacular production by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks about the WWII air war in the European theater. Those who know me are aware that I used to love flying planes. I once had the opportunity to take the controls of the B-17G called “Nine O Nine” over the skies of Seattle. With that background, I have been following the 10-year development of this series from its origins. While it’s not quite as compelling as “Band of Brothers,” the show has been well worth the wait. It’s a deeply emotional series highlighting the brave act ..read more

Video Workshop: Waltz Chasse Turning Left
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik
1M ago
If you have any significant ballroom dance experience, you’ll no doubt have danced hundreds of Waltz Chasses. But have you ever danced them turning to the left? We typically dance the Chasse in Waltz in a straight line. A standard Chasse has the lady rotating leftwards during the figure, but it still progresses in a straight line. When you dance a Progressive Chasse to the Right, the man rotates leftwards during the figure, but still dances it in a straight line diagonally or along the line of dance. In this half-hour workshop from our Kinvillage group class, we explore a fun grouping made ..read more

The lost art of floor craft
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik
2M ago
Floor craft is the skill of creating space on the dance floor. The purpose is to show off the lady as well as to be free to move, unencumbered by other dancers blocking your space. This is as much a technical skill as the footwork, frame and dynamics of dance movements. Yet it seems that a large number of guys are so busy thinking about their technique that they’re completely forgetting about managing their space on the floor. As Luca Baricchi famously put it, “You have a beautiful woman in your arms, and you’re thinking?!” When I was younger, my friends and I were passionate about trying to p ..read more

Video Workshop: 8 Cha Cha Chasses
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik
5M ago
Cha Cha isn’t a complicated dance, but its wide variety of options, which gives the dance flexibility and character, can sometimes seem a little overwhelming to social dancers. With so many Chasses to choose from, how do you choose? And how do you know which ones go with which other step patterns? This 30-minute workshop video helps provide answers to some of those very common questions. We look at 8 of the 9 Cha Cha Chasses in detail and provide pretty comprehensive technical insights into each of them. We then put the Chasses together into a fun grouping that you can use in social dance ..read more

What I love about Smooth Foxtrot
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik
6M ago
Originating in the early 20th Century, the American Smooth Foxtrot is a beautiful, elegant dance characterized by long, flowing movements and expressive use of the arms. It evolved from a simpler version of Foxtrot that’s now referred to as Social Foxtrot, and developed through the expressive choreography of the popular musical motion pictures like those starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Every dance has unique and beautiful characteristics. While I love all of them, there are numerous things I particularly like about the Smooth Foxtrot. These same things are why I recommend this danc ..read more

Reflections from the 2023 Canadian Championships
Delta Dance
by George Pytlik

This past weekend saw another spectacular NDCC Canadian Championship, this one taking place in the Ottawa Westin, due to a strike at the Lac Leamy Hilton across the river in Gatineau where the event is usually held. As the team was setting up the day before the competition started, a main water pipe burst in the hotel just two floors above the ballroom. The hallway to the ballroom was a mess, with broken ceiling tiles all over the floor and flood damage. For a couple of hours it was unclear if the event could even proceed, but the hotel response was exceptional and by the end of the night y ..read more
