Bamford Edge After recently getting myself back into the swing of things with a walk up Bleaklow, I decided this time to visit a spot that, despite it’s popularity, I’ve only ever visited once before. Bamford Edge. I parked at the Heatherdene car park opposite Ladybower (I would normally park for free near the Yorkshire Bridge Inn but all spots were taken) and thankfully the machine accepted card payments. The sky was looking a bit grey but the forecasts had promised blue sky and sun later so I kept my fingers crossed. I headed steeply up through the lower forested area, and to the left until ..read more

Rhodeswood and Torside Reservoirs After losing my hiking mojo since the COVID lockdown (which explains the absence of recent posts on this website), this was my first walk for quite some time (I think I’d done something like 4 walks in almost 4 years!). Hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of things now and do many more this year. This particular one didn’t get off to a good start. After finally arriving at the reservoirs on the A628, I saw that the entrance to Woodhead Road (and therefore the Torside car park) was closed. I didn’t really fancy the extra walking distance involved by startin ..read more

South Nab, Lady Cross, and Round Hill This was the second walk of a very hot sunny spring day. I’d completed the previous walk up to Snailsden Edge and Dead Edge End at lunchtime and it would have been a shame not to put the remainder of the day to good use. This walk starts at the parking area on the A628, roughly opposite the Dog & Partridge pub. From the parking area, I followed a track to the west. This track runs roughly parallel to the A628 on its north side and eventually emerges back alongside the road higher up. After a short trek up the depressingly litter strewn and very busy r ..read more

It’s not often I frequent the moors north of the A628 so I thought it would make a good location for my first Peak District walk since last summer. The weather forecasts were looking exceptionally good for the day, and so I decided to set off extremely early, arriving just after sunrise at 7am. The destination was the car park at Winscar Reservoir – a good starting point as it meant I’d be initially walking with my back to the low early morning sun. Winscar Reservoir and Snailsden Edge Winscar reservoir is one of 25 dams along the course of the River Don and was the last to be built with work ..read more

Blaen-y-nant, Cwm Glas Mawr, Cwm Glas, Lly Glas, Cwm Uchaf, Crib Goch North Ridge, Crib Goch, Bwlch Coch, Crib-y-Ddysgl, Garnedd Ugain, Gyrn Las, Cwm Glas Ridge I hadn’t been on a walk in Snowdonia since the summer before, where I failed the Welsh 3000s challenge. It was time to stop sulking about that and return. The plan was to obtain Crib Goch north ridge via Cwm Glas, continue along Crib Goch and Crib-y-Ddysgl as far as the Garnedd Ugain trig, then descend along the Cwm Glas ridge (something that I’ve never done before) back to the car. I parked in one of the laybys in Llanberis Pass near ..read more
