Genre expectations for POV

I'm working on the first draft of my first novel. It's a single POV in 1st person. However, the subgenre I'm writing in (historical romance) seems to be dominated by dual POV, close 3rd. So my question is, how much do you care about conforming to genre expectations when you are self publishing? Do you think it negatively affects sales? I've played around with adding the MMC's POV and writing it in 3rd person, but the writing doesn't sound as good. I like what I have written, especially since the novel is meant to be suspenseful, and single POV lends itself to that. submitted by /u/mfctxtz [v ..read more

I know romance and fantasy do well... how about contemporary fiction for women that involves men but no HEA? What used to be called chicklit, what is now more likely called spiralling women/disaster females/women vs the void/etc? Is there a market for that?

Hi, new writer-to-hopefully-be here. I've done plotting and been writing shorter pieces just to develop my voice, etc. I read about selfpub vs tradpub and the former seems better for me. Before I go further, I would like to understand the self published market and Kindle Unlimited market for books like in above. This is a tradpub example of the kind I'd like to write: Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey I will appreciate any comments, links, etc. Thank you :) submitted by /u/mywritingaccountyay [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Software to format children’s non-fiction with images

I’m co-authoring a few non-fiction children’s nature books with a wildlife/nature photographer and we plan to use their photos in the books. We’re trying to find software to use to format our books, but many of them seem to be for novels specifically, and those that are free and advertise being useful for children’s books don’t actually seem to be of any use for what we’re putting together. Does anyone have any software suggestions that will allow us to format books like this for POD and EPUB? It doesn’t have to be free, but we’ve been hesitant to purchase any since we’ve had such little luck ..read more

I organised a book launch. A library actually offered to fund it including food. They only ask I donate 2 books to them on the day. It’s already a sold out event and I feel very lucky. The problem? I don’t have a book! I aimed to release it a week before the event but pressed “publish” instead of scheduling a release date. I’ve already been asked to make 2 changes to formatting (file size). This happened pretty quickly (within 12 hours.). After making those changes I’m currently sitting at 24 hours and reading on here some people have waited up to 10 days!! Please share some positive stories ..read more

I really appreciated how it was told. Such a difficult topic to tell and he did incredible. I have self published dozens under 3 pen names but worried I will get my account shutdown mentioning sexual assault or really any kind of anatomy. I have lightly talked about the topics in my previous books but have never mentioned the word itself or details, just heavily implied it occurred or the aftermath. submitted by /u/pambannedfromchilis [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

A line editor or a copy editor?

Without getting too deep into my personal issues, and for budgetary reasons I can only afford one edit. I am using pro writing aid to get me through this last draft to make the process more bearable on my editor. My budget is 2,000 dollars. I am not doing a physical book launch, just amazon KDP, and an audio book. I have written four drafts of this 150k story over five years so it's not a low effort release. So which edit do you think I should pass on? submitted by /u/Pompodumstone [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How to tell if your cover artist uses AI?

I’m looking at different places to shop for a cover artist and fell down an AI rabbit hole. Problem is, I see a lot of AI vs trad art comparisons and I really really struggle to tell the difference. By that I mean, I see something and think, “Wow, that’s neat!” and then all the comments are pointing out it’s AI. But then they point to another one and say, “This is more like it!” I mean, sometimes it’s painfully obvious, but about half the time I can’t tell the difference. I’m sure there are warning signs or flags in artwork that point to AI, but I honestly don’t trust myself to be able to tel ..read more

Surprised at My Word Count and Not Sure Where to Go From Here…

Hi everyone! Like the title says, I was just adding to my book of prose, poetry and short essays and decided to check the word count, which I haven't done in AGES. i'm at 47,801 words. Since it’s not a novel, this is technically considered a book right? I've been working on it for about a year and a half, with the intention of self-publishing. I feel like it’s coming to a close and now, I'm not entirely sure what to do pertaining to publishing. I guess I should also mention that I’m 23 and have no social media presence (for my mental health), but I was thinking of making a website?? Agh, i do ..read more
