On March 20, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the final vehicle standards for cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs. These rules set progressively lower limits on tailpipe pollution on vehicles manufactured between 2027 and 2032.
EPA standards aren’t new. There are EPA vehicle standards in place right now. The recently finalized standards are simply a continuation of vehicle standards to protect human health and limit emissions. During daily pick-up and drop-offs at her daughter’s elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona,
Jazmin L.’s six-year-old noticed something peculiar about her mom’s vehicle. She asked why
their car didn’t have exhaust coming out of a pipe like everyone else’s did.
The answer was simple for Jazmin, a researcher who works for the City of Phoenix. “It’s
because our car is different because it doesn’t need gas,” Jazmin told her daughter. “The burn-
off gas that comes out of cars isn’t good for you. Our car is cleaner and healthier for you.” Now,
Jazmin’s daughter covers her f ..read more

Similar to other types of infrastructure, like highways, the electric power system is built to meet maximum demand. While a five-lane beltway may be nearly empty at four in the morning, all of those lanes are definitely being used during rush hour. Transmission operators and distribution utilities do the same thing. They build out the electric system capacity to meet maximum demand so that when everyone is running air conditioning and appliances at the same time, there is adequate electricity and infrastructure to keep the lights on.
Electricity use is not level. Depending on the time of day a ..read more

The shift to electric vehicles is a tremendous win for air quality, public health, energy security, jobs, and the planet. Electrifying transportation is critical to addressing the climate crisis and cutting tailpipe emissions, both of which disproportionately harm Indigenous, Black, and other communities of color. As we transition to a clean energy economy, we must update mining laws to maximize the benefits of transportation electrification while protecting communities and the environment. The mining industry has a well-documented history of social and environmental degradation that must be a ..read more

Recently, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) updated the national manual on what kind of signage can be added along highways across the country. Notably, the new signage helps to ensure that EV drivers and EV-interested consumers are easily able to locate charging stations the same way that gas vehicle drivers can.
With EVs growing in popularity, the new signage will help to raise awarenes ..read more

Making the switch to an all-electric vehicle takes a bit of a leap of faith. Many of us had our first electric vehicle experience with cheap radio-controlled toys that ran on a couple of D batteries before quickly growing wobbly and unresponsive.
Those of us who have made the leap of faith to modern electric vehicles (EVs) have learned that there are many benefits. Aside from costing less to fuel, being much easier to maintain, having zero emissions, and being super fun to drive, we have discovered that, unlike the batteries in our old radio-controlled toys, EV batteries are pretty amazi ..read more
