Questions about using screws and glues on acrylic and polycarbonate.

I'm looking into building a climbing volume (the grey boxs) out of a clear plastic. From my research polycarbonate and acrylic are the two options (PVC could be an option as well?). Climbing volumes are normally made from 3/4 inch thick plywood and climbing holds are then attached with deck screws or with bolts in pre-installed bolt holes. As I understand it acrylic would crack and break if screws were used in it without predrilling them. Would polycarbonate have the same issue? (this whole issue is circumnavigated by using bolts but I would prefer not to if I can) If I use acrylic solvent we ..read more

Heat Resistant Plastic

I'm thinking about a DIY project concept that involves keeping a sample heat-protected (less than 120F/ 50 C) while the container is sterilized at 200 F / 94 C for 3 hrs. I'm wanting to know if this would even be possible with common 3-D printing plastics like PETG. Any information would be helpful. What clear plastics dissolve in IPA?

So I've been cleaning some stuff around the house and stumbled upon a bike light that had some corrosion from a leaking battery inside. Knowing that IPA is safe for most plastics I pulled out my 90% IPA spray bottle to clean the inside, but to my surprise that made the whole lamp sticky all of a sudden. I look and it's the clear red plastic from it turning liquid right before my eyes, it was somehow quicker than acetone on some things. What the heck did they use on that thing? It was a really nice light. submitted by /u/Legitimate_Bad5847 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I have some yellow milk crates that I want to dye to orange and green colors, but I have no heat safe container big enough to boil something the size of a milk crate. Is there any way of dyeing this sort of plastic without the use of heat? submitted by /u/doctorEeevil [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How safe is PETG for other materials? (Such as coins)

I'm reaching out here because I haven't gotten an answer on r/numismatics. How safe is PETG for other materials? Will it corrode when it comes into contact with other materials over time? I've been researching safe materials for storing coins and stumbled upon an album with pages made of PETG. The company selling it claims it's acid-free and PVC-free. PETG is commonly used in the food industry for water bottles, wrappers, etc. Any thoughts from those more knowledgeable about this topic? Safest PVC plasticizer?

Hi! We’re installing vinyl sheet flooring at our bathroom, and it’s time to pick one. With the exception of homogenously colored ones (which the wife detests) there are no PVC free alternatives. So I’m left with choosing the least harmful ones. Anything I should look out for? They’ve all seem to have opted out of phatalates, and use stuff like DINCH. I’m still afraid this could migrate to dust / skin / toys, and that those phatalate substitutes are just as bad as the original chemicals in hindsight. Which PVC “green flags” should I look for in manufacturers of vinyl sheet flooring? Maybe I ex ..read more

I burned plastic by leaving it on the stove , only the ring was left. It created a white smoke , and the plastic burned into a light brown wonder if it’s dangerous and what type of plastic it could be . I inhaled a bit and I don’t notice any symptoms it didn’t really have a smell submitted by /u/Whole-Tasty [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
