Magnificent Andy scored a surprising win at Ascot on Saturday, but any notion of taking him to Victoria has been ruled out by trainer Stephen Miller. After a rails-hugging ride by Jarrad Noske, Magnificent Andy defeated Laced Up Heels in an exciting conclusion to the $200,000 Drummond Golf Joey (1200m). First up this campaign and starting at $17, Magnificent Andy edged out favourite Laced Up Heels by a nose to push stake earnings past half a million dollars. Although delighted by the win, Miller said it came somewhat unexpected early into his campaign. “It was really good as he probably went i ..read more

TIN CHOOKS ANSWERS THE QUESTIONS

When Tin Chooks commenced his current campaign last December, his trainer Kieran Regan was keen to test the waters and have a few private questions answered. Chief amongst Regan’s queries was whether Tin Chooks could develop into a consistent city horse or would he have to lower the bar and temper his expectations. Despite modest results, one maiden win at Belmont, Regan saw something in his horse that was more than a trainer’s blind faith, there were flashes of promise. Four months later and eight starts in, Regan has got his answer: Tin Chooks is a pretty good horse, in fact, he could be a p ..read more

The progress of boom filly Keshi Boom continues to please jockey William Pike as her much anticipated return to racing gathers momentum. All eyes are focused on the unbeaten Grant and Alana Williams-trained three-year-old who stamped her claims as a budding star last year. Keshi Boom completed a campaign clean sweep that culminated in winning the Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m)-Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) double. Having her second 950m hit out at Lark Hill today (Monday), Pike said Keshi Boom took an important step towards her comeback in a four-horse heat. Keshi Boom ran a comfortable 1.5 le ..read more

Two starts back, What A Prince ran second in the Batavia Sprint (1200m), Geraldton’s main sprint. Two starts later, What A Prince wins the Geraldton Cup (2100m), Geraldton’s premier race. Sunday’s popular home-town victory was the brainchild of trainer, Barry Newnham and executed to the minute by jockey, Chris Nicoll. Newnham’s decision to back his instinct and have What A Prince step up and target a cup distance race paid off in spades. The son of All Too Hard was the first to jump out and the first one home after the remaining pack couldn’t chase him down in front. What A Prince had 3/4 of a ..read more

RADFORD HEAPS PRAISE ON COMFORT ME

Rhys Radford never hides his admiration for Comfort Me, an outside chance of causing a big upset on his resumption in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1100m) at Ascot on Saturday. Radford considers the clash between Comfort Me and glamour mare Amelia’s Jewel as a David versus Goliath battle, but he’s confident his underdog won’t let anyone down. Comfort Me might not go down as Radford’s best ever horse, Great Shot could have him covered after Group 1 success in the Railway Stakes, but he’s not far behind. Comfort Me’s racing resume is missing that major career-defining victory, but it also reads how on t ..read more

It’s been a small sample size, but on exposed form trainer Russell Stewart has a few above average juveniles who are ready to stamp their claims for Karrakatta Plate (1200m) glory on April 20. The Karrakatta Plate, the jewel in the crown for two-year-olds, is high on the agenda for Stewart, who is set to saddle two of the fancied runners in the Gimcrack Stakes (1100m), Earthstorm and Golden Kathleen, a race he won with Kiss Bang Love (2017). Earthstorm’s had a two week gap between runs after running a long-neck second to Sir Dreamalot in the Supremacy Stakes (1000m) at Ascot, the Calyx fillies ..read more

Dan Morton believes he has the goods to win a sought-after WA Derby and can’t wait for the 2400m Group 2 race at Ascot on April 13. Morton has a good handle on what it takes to win the feature race for three-year-olds having prepared Alaskan God to victory in 2022. From the moment Morton outlayed $140,000 for In Good Order at Perth’s Magic Millions Sale, he’s long thought the son of American Pharoah was a WA Derby prospect. In Good Order gets the chance to validate Morton’s claim when he tackles the traditional lead-up to the WA Derby in Friday’s Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m). In Good Order i ..read more

ALASKAN AFTER ELUSIVE LUCK IN MELVISTA STAKES

Luck plays a role in any race, but it hasn’t exactly been a kind friend to Alaskan in recent times. Two starts back in a graduation handicap (1800m) Alaskan finished ahead of just one runner, but on a day that heavily favoured on pace runners, the back markers were up against it. Last fortnight in the J.C.Roberts Stakes (1800m) Alaskan finished a length second to Lord Vampi which earned high from Parnham after he endured a difficult run. Trapped wide for the majority of the race, Alaskan would have been entitled to fade back in the field, but the Playing God three-year-old kept plugging away a ..read more
