The Jigsaw Puzzle Analogy

If youth is wasted on the young, I have to admit I was the poster child as far as martial arts training goes. Pursuing a passion when you are young is one thing, but obsessively overtraining is quite another. That was me. About 10 years into my journey I heard a certain analogy, a lesson about training that resonated at the time and made me wish I’d heard it a decade before.   Not that I would have listened then anyway! But I feel it’s one of the most important lessons I can share with my athletes now, and it’s worth putting out there as a resource for any serious student not on ..read more

Ways to Improve your training.

I’d planned to write this post a few months ago. With the start of the year, we had been getting a lot of new members coming into Jax Muay Thai. As we chatted about the JMT curriculum and choice of classes, I found myself verbalizing my thoughts on the keys to progress in martial arts training. I had followed these concepts myself for decades, but had neglected them more recently. It was only through voicing them out loud that the ideas started percolating again. As usual I was struck by what Sir Winston Churchill once said: “Men occasionally stumble over the trut ..read more

Omar Lee and the Triumph over Fear

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. — Nelson Mandela Our teammate, coach and friend Omar Lee was involved in a single car accident on Sunday of last week, resulting in multiple fractures that required a lengthy surgery last Monday. He has been recovering in hospital and is in good spirits. Many weeks of rehab lay ahead, but he has already proven his determination to fight for every inch of progress. It’s obviously been a stressful time for all of us, but I know wi ..read more

We’re into week number two of reopening after the lockdown, and it’s great to see our students starting to fill up the gym again. We’re still in Phase One of our reopening plan and therefore avoiding partner drills to maintain social distancing. We’re making the guidelines work to our advantage, focusing on dynamic flexibility and stability throughout class time. The sessions begin with a thorough warm-up; usually joint circles and jump rope, forward leg swings and side leg swings, and footwork drills. Shadowboxing drills concentrate on the theme of the week. In some classes, student ..read more

What better time to train!

What better time to train than now? For many of us facing social isolation this is the perfect opportunity to practice more. This extra time is a gift. It’s what many of us have secretly been asking for. Hours without distractions, no frustrating commute, no colleagues or boss stealing our day with so many tasks. We finally have some time for ourselves.  I know some of you may say, “but I can’t get to the gym” or, “I have no training partner, or equipment at home.” But that’s ok, in fact, that’s good. Often we become attached to those crut ..read more

What a year 2019 was for JMT and I know that it was just the start of fantastic things to come in 2020. We started the year off with a trip to Boston in the middle of a Blizzard for Austin to fight and beat one of the top amateurs in the country.  Once the snow cleared it was back to Jax Muay Thai to get ready for our big visit by 8 x World Champion and Muay Thai legend Liam Harrison. The Seminar was a huge success and we learned some fun new tricks and made new friends.  Then we headed off to Washington DC with Landon, Austin and Hilly. Landon got another KO win, Austin beat ..read more

Going Mental – Mental Training in Martial Arts

Mental Training for Martial Arts—The Missing Link! In the six years since starting JMT and becoming a full-time coach, I’ve learned that mental training is probably the most neglected aspect of martial arts for most students. Ironically, it’s probably the element of martial arts that can best be applied to sports, school, work and other aspects of life. It’s also this neglect that’s holding many people back from performing at their true potential. But this “missing link” is not as elusive as it seems—it can and should be trained just as much as the physical elements. I’ve told many of my stud ..read more
