There are dozens of paths to follow when it comes to entertainment art. But story art might be the most varied (and possibly the most complex). It feels like a mix between writing, character design, and directing all rolled into one. It’s certainly a coveted role across the entire animation industry, and David Trumble is a name to keep an eye on in the story art space. In this interview we cover a lot of ground (and it’s a long one so strap in!) We’re going over his history with art, how he got into story art professionally, plus a lot of nitty-gritty details about the day-to-day life of a pro ..read more

What are 3D & Game Shaders?
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham

A shader is an extra bit of code that is added to a render of a scene (or any other post production method). Shaders can alter visuals by changing the way textures and lighting are displayed, sometimes in ways that would be impossible with other techniques. Shaders were originally designed to alter just the actual shading(referring to light) in a final scene, hence the name. This has since evolved to alter all kinds of effects such as hue and saturation, bloom, contrast, and motion blur. A shader is developed to use the computer’s GPU to add these effects, taking strain off the CPU for other t ..read more

What is High & Low Poly in 3D Modeling?
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham

The main difference between high and low polygon modeling is exactly what the name implies: whether you use a high number of polygons in your model, or a low number. However there are other things to take into consideration when deciding the detail and poly level of each model. Most notably the textures you use in your materials. This article will go into the differences, the pros, and the cons of each type and why you should decide which technique you wish to use before you start modelling! Should I Use High or Low Poly? The answer to this question is highly dependent on how you intend to use ..read more

What is LOD (Level of Detail) in 3D Modeling?
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham
4y ago
LOD stands for level of detail, and it’s the process of making less detailed versions of your models that are viewed when they’re further away from the camera. This lowers the strain on the computer allowing it to render more objects while maintaining a high frame rate. There are generally 2 parts of the model that get optimized for LOD. These are the geometry (polygon count) and the texture resolution (lower resolution textures = smaller file size). LODs are usually numbered within the real time engine that you use. LOD0 is the full detail model that is viewed closest to the camera. From ther ..read more

Polygonal and NURBS Modeling: What’s The Difference?
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham
4y ago
The main difference between polygonal and NURBS modeling is the way the mesh is calculated by the computer. For polygon modeling it calculates polygons, which are flat planes that comprise a 3D shape (the way that a cube is made out of 6 squares for example). NURBS calculates the mesh as splines between points, which can make curves out of a single section of geometry. NURBS (which is shorthand for Non-Uniform Rational B-splines) uses complex mathematics to calculate the surface of a model. This means that it is far better suited for models where a high degree of accuracy is needed. A good exa ..read more

What are Procedural Textures (Procedural Maps)?
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham

Procedural textures are textures (sometimes also called maps) that are generated by the computer using a fixed set of parameters. This means that the computer can make unique variations of a texture all by itself! The process used to do this is called procedural generation. Procedural generation is a blanket term for when a computer generates data automatically, rather than the user having to do it by hand. This is often used in many other areas of 3D work and gaming. Minecraft, for example, has a map that is procedurally generated which is what allows it to be so large. The manpower to make t ..read more

What are Falloff Maps? (Definition For 3D Work)
Concept Art Empire
by Thomas Denham
4y ago
Falloff maps are a type of map that can be found in most 3D & game engines. These maps can change the color of an object when parts of it start to face away from the camera. The render engine will calculate the angles of parts of your geometry in relation to the camera position, and will add the second falloff color to parts that exceed a certain angle. The sharper the angle away from the camera, the stronger your falloff color will come through. This can be used to add an ambient occlusion type, self-shadowing effect to sections of your model, without having to make an actual AO map. Alte ..read more

What is an Animatic in Animation?
Concept Art Empire
by Claire Heginbotham
4y ago
An animatic is a series of storyboard images that have been timed into a pre-visualization video to preview an animated film, show, or video game. Animatics vary greatly in detail according to the length of animation and budget. Some are static storyboard frames showing just the timing of shots. Other types of animatics include more detailed camera pans and even some basic animation effects. Most also include a first draft of the audio soundtrack and/or voice acting. The job of an animatic artist is to estimate the time needed for each shot — and in some cases the in-between movements. Studios ..read more

For this review I went through the New Masters Academy website digging into their premium membership plan. This educational art site was founded in 2012 and features traditional mediums such as drawing, painting and sculpture(along with technical topics like anatomy and even animation). It claims to include over 1000 hours of video content from over twenty instructors. For $35 per month you get a subscription with access to the entire library of content on the site. So far I have exclusively written about digital-focused art courses, so I’m really looking forward to actually getting my hands ..read more
