Bather Workload

I have a couple years of experience bathing both in daycare and in salons, but for the last year or so I've been solo doing in-home grooming. I'm interviewing right now to get back to something more consistent. My question is, what do you think a reasonable number of dogs in an 8hr shift is for a bather? The most recent place I interviewed at said 12 a day per bather is normal for them....that sounds like a lot to me, but it's been a while since I was in a salon so maybe my perspective is just a little off? submitted by /u/punkslug [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

So, I'm grooming for about 1y now and I don't like the final result in 99.99% of my grooms ? specifically TBF. I feel confident(ish)doing perm. trims, but I do think all my TBF look choppy and not very round. Any criticism would be appreciated! submitted by /u/RipRevolutionary7778 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

"Corporate groomers are only in it for the money" rant.

The slack I get from pet parents for being "just" a corporate groomer is insane. I spend my days risking getting fired or taking serious damage to my body from taking in their dogs with behaviors that by policy I should turn away. I spend my own money on special shampoos for allergy ridden dogs, special probiotic ear cleaner, gentle wipes, ect, all of which I could also get fired for bc it wasn't supplied by the pet parent and we aren't allowed to use non supplied products. I get yelled at for not squeezing in dogs into an already over pack schedule because "I've been coming there for years a ..read more

Has anyone ever actually SEEN a poodle??

Came across the Australian Shepherd subreddit today and there was a post about an Aussie who went in for an outline trim and came out 1 inch all over. There was the usual panic about how the coat is destroyed forever, the dog is doomed to a life of sunburn and overheating, and the usual comments about how the groomer needs to be turned in to both the BBB and ASPCA. But then were the comments about how they made the dog look like a poodle. An Australian Shepherd who was an inch all over. How in the world does that look like a poodle? submitted by /u/evieAZ [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello all, I am currently on track to become a bather at my local grooming salon, but I still need to practice cutting nails. I tried to cut a Frenchie’s nails last week, but I accidentally quicked one of them. Thus, I was wondering if you could offer me some tips for getting better at cutting nails. submitted by /u/Temporary_Wear5834 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Do shear holders dull your shears?

I've been looking for something to organize my shears when they're on my station, but one of my coworkers told me to avoid this style of holder because it'll dull your shears over time. Is this true? She was recommending those suspended acrylic stands instead since it'll only be touching the handle, but those seem to be significantly more expensive. I can see how the tip might get dulled if you're like dropping it into the holder full force, but does it make any noticeable difference with the sharpness of the shear itself? submitted by /u/Tarakore [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Ask and you shall receive! I did a 4 all over with poms, per the photo she gave me. Thank goodness cause the dog was matted. It was a pain in the ass to do but I am super proud of the outcome ❤️ submitted by /u/cntbeseez [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Double Coat not maintained - Advice/Thoughts?

To preface, I'm getting this dog from my parents in early June. She's been in the family since she was old enough to leave the breeder, and I'm very excited to be bringing her to my place to live and can get her looking in much better condition. She's an Australian Shepherd, yes overweight, we'll be working on that too, and I'd guess probably hasn't been properly groomed in years. I'm including photos that were sent to me that hopefully help show how desperately she needs a groom. While I know double-coated dogs need regular brushing, a proper undercoat rake, etc. and do plan to take her ..read more
