How to Talk Back to Your Inner Critic
Melissa Camara Wilkins | Be who you were made to be

Lately, it seems like the world is delivering up opportunities for us to move into unfamiliar spaces, and to be a little braver, and to reimagine… everything, on a daily basis. And one thing I’ve noticed is that for most of us, our inner critic tends to be at its loudest when we’re in uncharted territory. So what do you do with that little voice that pipes up to say: You might as well keep quiet. You don’t want to say the wrong thing.⁣ Or: How dare you? Who do you think you are?⁣ Or (my own personal favorite-not-favorite): Ugh, you are the worst.⁣ What do you do with that k ..read more

11 Picture Books for Celebrating Pride at Home

Parades aren’t happening where I live this year, so I asked my friend, children’s book author Meeg Pincus, for a list of her favorite picture books for celebrating Pride from home! Book links throughout this site–including the ones on this page–are affiliate links. Learn more here. Celebrating Pride With Kids My littlest kid would tell you we celebrate Pride because everybody gets to love who they love, and we all get to be who we really are. I would add: and so that every single child of God (that would be: everybody) is celebrated for who they were made to be. And so that my own kids k ..read more

3 Things You Do NOT Need To Be In Charge Of Right Now

Last week, my older kids wanted to watch movies about elves and hobbits and swords. These are movies to watch after putting the younger kids to bed, so: late night hobbit movies. I watched with them and learned an important lesson. If you stay up until late o’clock watching movies with your kids, it does not matter if you get up early or sleep in the next day. You will be useless before noon either way. You might as well sleep in. That is what I learned. I wonder if my big kids will remember this as a season of Watching All The Movies. Or maybe they will remember it as the season Mom and ..read more

How Full Is Your Tank REALLY?
Melissa Camara Wilkins | Be who you were made to be

So. About that time I accidentally gave myself food poisoning… (I promise we’re going somewhere with this.) How are we doing today, loves? Is your tank full? Are we running on empty? (Please know that this is the SUM TOTAL of my ability to make vehicle-related references. Tank full/tank empty. That is all I’ve got here.) Last week, I managed to accidentally give myself food poisoning. And as I was recovering from eating the thing I wish I did not eat, I kept thinking: Aha! I feel better now! I can do things again! And then five minutes later I would realize: Nope, I cannot. I feel *better*, b ..read more

1 Trick For When You’re Worried About What MIGHT Happen

Okay, I need to tell you the Yoga Pants Story. Because this week I keep finding myself spinning out into FUTURE ANXIETIES. What if…? What will we do when…? What about…? I could come up with these all day. But if I’m in my head anxious about the FUTURE, I’m not RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. I’m worrying over what MIGHT happen instead of being present for what IS happening. Let’s be together in THIS moment instead, okay? (What does this have to do with YOGA PANTS?? Watch the video.) What to Do When You’re Worried About What MIGHT Happen How to Be Present In This Moment Here’s one trick that helps me ..read more

This week was supposed to be a travel week for me. I was supposed to be speaking at a conference in Los Angeles. I was going to speak, and I was going to hang out with friends who were attending the conference with me, and I was going to meet up with readers and sign books. That was the plan, once upon a time. Instead I am… not doing any of those things. And honestly, I’m bummed.  Yes, there are plenty of harder things in the world right now than “not getting to do one of the extra-fun parts of my job” but life is not a comparison game. This is a bummer for me, and I’m allowed to be ..read more

One Trick for Letting Go of Tension
Melissa Camara Wilkins | Be who you were made to be

Quick question: Where are you holding tension in your body right now?⁣ Is it in your neck? In your lower back? The pit of your stomach? Your forehead?⁣ I keep noticing that I’m holding ridiculous amounts of tension right between my shoulder blades, as though I’m getting ready to throw a shotput at a moment’s notice. (I have never thrown a shotput in my life. I’m not even sure what a shotput IS, honestly, but if I’m going to be throwing anything in this theoretical example, it might as well be that.) I think it’s time to talk about how to RELAX.⁣ I know that might sound a little bit ..read more

3 Ways to STOP Feeling Overwhelmed

Let’s talk about feeling overwhelmed and how to, you know, NOT.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Lately it feels like every day lasts actually FOREVER, and at the same time, at the end of the day I feel like I did… maybe nothing?⁣⁣ At least, nothing I can point to and say: THIS IS WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED YAY ME.⁣⁣ There are (sometimes) bored kids to help and meals to plan and work to be done and it’s all a whirlwind of things on top of each other.⁣⁣ And when those days stack up on top of each other, we can start to feel weird. Just WEIRD.⁣⁣ Like: is it just me? Did I just fail to get it together? Is that why the days feel s ..read more

9 Tools to Empower You Right Now

Sometimes—maybe especially when your world is in upheaval, like, I don’t know, MAYBE BECAUSE WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, just for one example—old STUFF comes up.⁣ ⁣Old habits. Old coping strategies. Old stories. Old fears. Old responses. Old ways of interacting. Stuff you thought you’d worked through, but then it shows up again. That stuff.⁣ That’s what was happening for me late at night for awhile. I’d lie awake turning over the same old stories I thought I’d worked through ages ago—but here they were again, just as insistent as I remembered them. I think sometimes that&nbs ..read more

Is It Helping or Is It Numbing?? One Way To Tell

Lately, all my social media feeds seem to be either a competition to do the MOST or a competition to do the LEAST.⁣⁣ On the one hand, we have the “learn a new language and take up kick-boxing from home!” message. On the other, we have the “today is for eating chips in my underwear don’t even try to stop me” thing going on. It’s the Self-Improvement Olympics vs. the Slacker Championship out there. And not to put too fine a point on it, but:⁣⁣ BOTH SIDES ARE WRONG.⁣⁣ I keep wanting to yell at the memes that pop up on my screen:⁣⁣ Stop telling people they’re not worthy unless they “improve” them ..read more
